Not only on the 1,300th win, but for doing something he rarely does...making the right pitching moves at the right time. he pulled lange at the right time and kept newman in when he should have going to the 9th

He managed the pitchers very well tonight. I would have bet that he was going to bring out Gilbert in the 9th even though Newman was dealing.

Right, you are much better at knowing the right pitching moves to made than Mainieri.

He has 1300 wins and you have?

If Newman gives up a bloop single on a great pitch with 2 outs to tie the game, would it have still been a good decision to leave him in? Many Ranters would have found a way to blame Mainieri.

I have said this all along....in baseball, just because a coaching move doesn't work it doesn't make it a bad decision. I don't care what would have happened, leaving Newman in was a great decision...even if he had given up a hit.

You are 100% right, but this is the Rant. If everyone on here was level headed and rational, this place would be boring.

Mainieri did a great job coaching these last two games. I'm the first to say I was flat out wrong thinking LSU had no shot to win this series. Great job Tigers!

They have some idiot LSU fans in every sport, but the baseball morons are pretty rough. Hindsight is 20/20.

If PM would have brought in Gilbert and he would have shut down Vandy, would it have been the wrong move?

If he left Newman in and he gave up a run, would it have still be the right move?

It's so easy to say after the game is over that this move or that move was right or wrong.

Bottom line... PM doesn't deserve the credit for this win as much as he wouldn't deserve the criticism if they lost.

That makes too much sense...please stop posting until you can be more negative. Thanks

I thought with runners on first and second in the bot of the 8th they should have bunted... Especially with Freeman up.

PM didn't and it was the perfect call, because of how Vandy played it and where Freeman hit it.

If they play it straight up, that same hit ball is a double play.

PM made the perfect call in the situation because it worked perfectly (outside of Cain sending Reid home). That could have been a disastrous call had it been played different.

That's why it's so stupid to criticize situations like that. If they work then PM is a genius. If they don't then he's a horrible coach. In actuality, he is neither because of that one situation.

Enough common fricking sense to know he should have 1800.

Yep, and when a move doesn't produce the intended result, most "fans" here don't give CPM the slightest benefit of doubt.

I agree, he has done a good job managing this young team lately. I believe they just need exp, and they are getting that now. Great job tigers

making the right pitching move

I was watching with a former LSU pitcher. He was calling for Lang to be pulled two batters earlier and for Newman to be pulled with one or two gone in the ninth.

I'm just pointing out that these are judgement calls, and there are many "right" and many "wrong" decisions. It worked this time. But if Newman had let the game slip away the rant would have said, "Newman was over 40 pitches. They were seeing him for the second time. He's not used to throwing more than 30 pitches, or so. CPM always leaves guys in too long."

Also, what would the rant have said if Lang's 118th pitch went yard?

Baseball is much slower than most sports and really a lot less complex so it allows for way more second guessing every single decision a manager makes. The games whithin the game is what makes the sport great. That call to let Freeman swing was absolutely great. Vandy helped by being very obvious that the wheel play was on.

What a great baseball play that was! The way the ball was hit appeared to justify sending him. But Cain should have seen Reid almost stop to avoid being hit. Still, it was a friggin rifle shot to gun him down!

Plus, they sent a runner earlier who scored when the throw was in time but up the first base line. You win some, you lose some. Even though it could have cost LSU the victory that was the best play of the night.
