What an original thought. You are the first person to suggest this. Have you spoken with Les about this completely out of the box suggestion ?

He's a great DLine coach and an Elite recruiter.
But 30 years and he's never been a DC? Why

Promoting within hasn't seemed to work out well with Les Miles, especially guys with no experience at it.

I would rather get a great DC, but if this is what it takes to keep O.. then idk.

Coaching football is not rocket science. Coach O will be just fine as DC. He has been coaching all his adult life and has head coaching experience. I think he will handle the job as LSU DC just fine. I love the passion that he brings which LSU has been missing for quite a while.

So when Les hired Steele and Ed, you don't think Les would've made Ed DC if that was a good option? So apparently Les has a higher opinion of Steele at DC than Ed, and I would agree with that.
Hell maybe he doesn't even want to be DC, Hanny mentioned this.

With all of O's credentials and experience how many programs have given him the reigns to their D? Why is that?

again, Pat Hayden did and he went 6-2 at USC with a win over Stanford as HEAD COACH in the gig right before this one. Why would DC be harder than having a winning team in the Pac 12 with about 30 minutes to prepare?

Was he calling the defense or did they have a DC on staff and O was just a rah rah figure head?

Don't know/can't prove it either way. But I'm sure he has more than enough experience to decide (along with the HC) what base D to run and how to attack down and distance. The position coaches handle the rest of the hands-on coaching. That's why he has made such a big impact on our front 4.
