• I asked a contact of mine who is working for an agent after scouting for an AL team for several years if he had seen Micah Gibbs this spring enough to come to any conclusions about him, particularly as a bat. "He's a decent athlete who can throw some, hit some and isn't a bad receiver," he said. "But he may be drafted higher than his tools suggest he should because he's got a legit reputation for being good with pitchers." It's tough to justify draft a kid in the first round based on that sort of evaluation but Gibbs also brings versatility -- he's a switch hitter -- and a strong work ethic to the field every day. "He's a first-day guy, I think, but I'm not sure we're talking all-star."

• The same evaluator on Gibbs' teammate Leon Landry: "He can run, is very strong and his swing is compact, but he's not a center fielder." If that is the case, Landry probably doesn't go in round one and may have problems getting taken off the board in the Top 50. A club that believes he can play center could pop him in the second half of the first, though.

Yeah, Landry isn't getting drafted in the first round. Or the 2nd round.

IMO, Gibbs is a late 1st rounder or 2nd rounder. Like your contact said, he's good all-around. He doesn't have any real weaknesses.

Landry is probably a 3rd rounder at best. He needs work on hitting lefties.

what is he batting against lefties this year? I could swear I heard on the radio during Sunday's game that he's .400 against lefties this year. Perhaps is I didn't hear it right.

He's .345 overall, so I doubt it. I don't know his leftie average, but whenever I've seen him face lefties, he usually looks silly up there and is especially vulnerable to the curve ball.

The myth of Leon having problems against lefties was last year's issue.

Landry will get drafted high enough to sign
Problem with Landry is he's not very projectable like Jared Mitchell was
What you see is what you get.

Holes in swing although better this year
Has power potential that hasn't shown up this year
He should have more stolen bases
Weak arm from center field

I'd be shocked to see Landry off the board before the 3rd round, and I think Gibbs eventually falls to 2-3 round guy by the time the draft rolls around...Not trying to be a downer here, just what I see on the field-

If Gibbs had a better arm, he would be a first round pick. He doesn't throw a lot of guys out, but he is smart and he doesn't let much get by him.

Gibbs being a switch-hitting catcher who can hit, works well with pitchers is a plus. I think his arm is average.

Landry has everything you need, except one thing. He has a weak arm.

Landry is batting better than .400 against lefties this year...Hawthorne said the exact one on Sunday during the game. I was suprised by it, thats why I remember!

I'm hearing Gibbs in the 2nd round as of last week. Teams like the Reds, Indians, and Mets have shown added interest.

Landry could go anywhere from round 3-7, it's really a crap shoot until he consisently starts hitting.

Ranaudo still top 5 in many mock drafts.

Dean's status hasn't changed since December. Most likely rounds 5-10.

Well, if Jim said it, you know it has to be right.

Also the potential that Ross and Bradshaw would receive draft interest in the top 20 rounds has all but been put to a rest.

Gibbs, Landry, and Ranaudo will NOT be back next year barring unspeakable surprises.

It's just another word on "how" he catches. Can mean how he sets up when the pitcher is throwing, how he communicates with his teammates, quickness to get the ball out the glove... the scout didn't really specify.

I think Landry goes 4-7th round. He is not a great situational hitter but has good speed and is a good outfielder.

Micah will go somewhere in the 3-5th rounds IMO.
