According to a couple of HS coaches I know that work LSU summer camps, Coach Porter moving on will help. They said that he was the hardest person to get along with on the staff and that most of the staff and players didn't get along with him. He never saw eye to eye with Crowton on running game issues so that caused some problems. The only running back he favored was CS and KW and SR couldn't stand him. This is one of the reasons KW didn't see much playing time.

I think the offensive staff will be more together this year on things.

Didn't Williams say that none of his coaching ever came from Coach Porter and more so from Coach Miles?

It's no secret he's hard to get along with and the RBs as a whole didn't really 'like' him. But negatigers far and wide have said over and over you don't have to be liked to be a good coach.

Keiland didn't practice like Porter wanted him to practice, and that's the main reason why he didn't play - whether we would have thought it was a good practice or not is not the point.

His backs averaged good yardage, blocked well, caught well, and didn't fumble. The main drawback was his rotation of backs - which was curious at the most inopportune times and which prevented the backs and the offense (at times) to no be in rhythm.

So who didnt teach KW how to pass block, because that is why he didnt see the snaps that CS did?

I think it has been substantiated that Porter had final say on personnel decision at RB and that Crowton could not overrule him.

That is a curious set up where the RB coach can overrule the OC IMHO and that's the head man's decision.

And Porter's RB rotation was often head-scratching, the decision not to play Scott in the second half at Kentucky in 2007 of course being the most glaring example.

If Miles ditches that unusual philosiphy that would be a step in the right direction.

You guys shouldn't have a problem with Billy Gonzales.

KW didn't play b/c he tended to bust his runs to the outside too much for Porter's liking.

fyi, heard the same about Porter ... he was solely responsible for the whack RB subs and benched players if they hit the wrong hole.

My question is that if he was actually the reason for the problem (and the above was a problem trend that every fan saw and complained about), then why didn't Miles do something about it? Does he have zero authority or does he trust his assistants implicitly and would rather not undermine them, even if what they're doing was wrong?

It's not that KW couldn't pass block it's just Scott did it better.

impossible...the coaching staff hates fundamentals and outright refuses to bench players who make mistakes!!!

If this is all true, why the hell Miles wants to keep him just for the bowl. He should want to run him out to memphis and get rid of the little cancer and move on to better things. Sometimes his loyalty is dead wrong.

Yeah, people who are hard to get along with never are successful in their fields.

Saban is a regular teddy bear. I bet he comes home after practice and puts on his sweater and tennis shoes just like Mr. Rogers.

it was during an interview, someone asked a question about "his coach", referring to Porter, and KW replied "My coach is Coach Miles"...he wasn't saying that Miles coached him, but was dissing Porter.

Everyone is asking why didn't Miles intervene...Don't forget...Porter was asst. Head Coach. He probably didn't want to step on his toes even though it was his team...Just a thought!

I agree the higher ranking person should have the final say.

Reminds of a funny story. In 8th grade, the school's "AD" was also assistant football coach. The HC gave him some paperwork to take care of as the assistant coach, at which point the assistant coach turned around and gave it back to him as AD.

Porter and Miles are really good friends, so the fact Miles allowed a RB coach to overrule the OC and have way too much input doesn't surprise me at all. I've heard often that Porter was an arrogant prick and just an arse to the players, which surprised me with how well he could recruit with that persona.

He had way too much influence on personnel and it cost us several games over the past 5 years. He's been with Miles for many years, and Miles is loyal to a fault at times. That's just how he is. People wanted to claim Keiland just wasn't that good, but he just wasn't Porter's type of running back and Porter screwed him over for that reason.

don't tell that to the forelsu crowd that will tell you that LSU's personnel usage has been perfect since Miles' arrival
