PM should take a lesson from Gaspard handling the bullpen

All weekend long, before LSU got things going from the 6th inning on, Gaspard had someone loosening up in the pen. And when LSU would get it going, he had a pretty short hook. He didn't have as short of a leash during the 8th inning today and that cost him.

That's probably at least part of the reason their pitching has been so good this year.

Another example: I know Gilbert is the closer, but we were 1 single from a tie game in the 9th. If it gets tied up, you need to have someone else like Norman ready to come in to put out the fire and potentially go for extras.

He's never learned his lesson in those situations against better coaches. He definitely won't learn it from a coach entering this season on the hot seat.

Absolutely! PM should definitely pay close attention to how Gaspard manages his bullpen and the game in general. The guy has won 55% of his games at Bama. Hes the barometer.

These "fly-by" LSU fans don't know that. Hell, they probably want to hire the guy to replace CPM. Not knowing that Bama fans want to get rid of him.

Two things.

Bugg in the 8th yesterday down by two. Gilbert in the 7th today down by 3. Looking at those situations side by side makes me chuckle.

Also, if you have Gilbert ready and are willing to pitch him in the 7th with 2 outs, why not the quick hook on Newman? The logic doesn't work. If you have him ready as a stopper, then use him as a stopper for frick's sake.

Josh is not a fly-by fan. In fact, he's basically been defending PM for 24 hours. Can you give an actual argument about why Gaspard's handling was bad and not to be something to learn from?

Please show me where I said PM should manage his team as a whole like Gaspard. I specifically mentioned one element of his coaching. If you can't understand the logic, then I can't help you. You can learn good lessons from coaches who aren't as successfull as you.

I didn't ask to hire him. I simply request that he take a specific piece of another coach's strategy to better himself.

I can vouch for josh.

Guy doesn't criticize unless it's warranted.

He's one of the true baseball fans that I trust when discussing the team.

Its always fun to be on both sides of the arguments

Thats what I want to see. Reading comprehension is hard for some.

Agree with Josh. Even today in the ninth, it would be wise to have both a lhp and a rhp getting loose. It can't hurt and it sure can help.

Yep. At least have them out there stretching and soft tossing.

Josh is spot on. CPM is routinely caught with his pants down when opponents rallies start. He doesn't seem to want to get the bullpen stirring until after a rally has started. Many times, it's a full blown 3 alarm fire before we have a reliever ready to enter the game.

I guess the only defense of it is you don't want to mentally rattle the pitcher you have on the mound.....but with the way he puts his players through the ringer in the fall and spring practice (his general attitude) I think they are strong enough to handle someone warming in the bullpen.

Josh while I agree with you, he's also constantly getting on Bama fans' nerves because he'll leave a guy in too long. Just today he let a guy go two batters more than he should have.

OP, do consider that CPM & Coach Dunn, pre game, every game, sit down & work out a pitching plan for every situation. Both CPM & Dunn have been quoted as doing so several times. I feel a lot better with those 2 making pitching decisions than anyone on the rant, or even outside the program. Dunn alone knows more about pitching than anyone here. The OP especially. Do love all the experts who are always right, post game. CPM & Coach Dunn won the SEC regular season championship, the toughest conference in the county, managing the pitching staff just fine. It's called baseball, i.e. shite happens all the time.

Week after week, year after year I look at an empty bullpen. PM waits for the pitcher to get smashed, then you'll see him sending someone to the bullpen to try and clean up the mess. Don't think he will ever change.
