This is a question for the baseball gurus:

How hard is it to build up stamina as a pitcher?

The reason I ask is because many think Hess moves to be a weekend starter next year but watching him pitch the last couple of months, it's evident that his stamina is lacking. Last night he came in the game throwing 96 abd by the 9th, his fastball was down to about 91. He lost 5mph in less than 50 pitches.

Not digging on Hess at all, just wondering how realistic it is to think that he can build up the stamina to go 7 innings next year. Worst comes to worst, he's the becomes the greatest closer ever to wear a tiger uniform.

He won't throw 97 as a starter in college. He will sit around 93-95 and reach back and throw 97 when he needs too.

Is it easy for a pitcher to do that? Can you just take a little off without issue?

I literally have no clue which is why I'm asking

Hess was still throwing 95 in the 9th inning. His control issues may have led to some more relaxed fastballs just trying to get over for a strike, but I'm 100% positive he had a few in the 95 mph range still as well.

A lot of guys do that. You just don't go max effort on every pitch like you can coming out the pen for an inning or two. 93-95 can get a lot of swings and misses in neutral counts. You go get that 97 when you need a big strikeout on a 3-2 pitch.
