Pinch hit a guy with no hits this season

Who has struck out 7 of 10 at bats this year for the last out of the game when we have runners in scoring position.

That's a great question.
Another great question would be why they traveled a pitcher that is hurt and has zero chance of pitching. Or why they brought a 4th string catcher just to catch bullpen.

I seem to remember a relatively unknown hitter, home run his way into LSU history and won an espy for the play of the century in a game that probably didn't mean much. 1996 or so

Da frick are you talking about? Warren Morris got hurt that season, but LSU was like 22-0 with him in the lineup. He wasn't an "unknown hitter". He made the US Olympic Team that very summer for crying out loud.
