Parity in college football

Is the era of an undefeated national champion gone? And is the reason that the talent is now distributed much more widely among many more quality programs?
If South Florida can be ranked as high as #2 within a decade of beginning a program; if Rutgers and Boise State can be real players on the national scene; if LSU can win the MNC with not one, but two losses; if Conference USA teams and WAC and Mountain West teams beating (ranked) Big 12 teams is no longer BIG news, are we not seeing an evening of the playing field in terms of coaching, recruitment and quality of teams?
In a sport in which defense has always been the key to success, is the spread offense changing the game to the point where there has been a paradigm shift?
Will the evening of distribution of talent not demand a playoff system that at least prevents the vagaries of schedule from rewarding a weak SOS?
Thoughts?

The spread has changed things but not to the point of a paradigm shift. It's what the spread has spawned that has changed the game: the SPARQ, 7-on-7, and speed camps. The talent pool is deeper because of more advanced training practices in high school. Coaches recruit speed now more than ever to turn the tide of the game. The elite teams will always make the stop and impose their will defensively against any offense.
I think there still will be undefeated national champions, but the next one may be a mid-major that beats two or three ranked teams, runs the table in their conference, and gets a fortuitous boost in the polls. At that point, expect the BCS commissioners to demand a playoff and probably get one. Highly unlikely, but a possibility nonetheless.

4 out of the last 6 national champions have had one or more losses....
Before that, only 2 out of 13 had a loss.
I agree with your statement!

College football is becoming MORE like college basketball with respect to parody. Many fans cannot accept that opinion, so they think their team sucks when they squeak by a mid major or a lesser conference foe.

Parity has improved dramatically, and I like it.
Another thing I really really like is that there was a trend for College FB to mimic Pro style schemes. That seems to have changed as well. The option and new variants on it are being run again. Smaller, faster players are having great college careers. Mobile quarterbacks are on the rise. Etc. Etc.
College football seems to have become its own game again, and not just a training program for NFL players.
