What you really mean is that you leave disappointed that you didn't see a ton of made jumpers.

I can't fault you for that because most fans like to see that, but there are a ton of other things going on during the game that Simmons does exponentially better than anyone else on the floor, particularly for LSU. That has been consistent every time I've seen LSU play.

lacks effort

What word would you use to describe the play in the 2nd half when he dove out of bounds for a loose ball?

I'm not saying he never gives effort, just most of the time he can't get rid of the ball fast enough. How about attacking the rim a bit more? Isn't that what a gamechanger is supposed to do? Most of the time he is invisible.

He didn't. But 20 turnovers, shooting 30% from 3 and allowing so many 2nd chance points wouldn't have been negated if Ben had "taken over".

Well then, I have to defer to your greater knowledge of the finer points of the game. I'm obviously not as astute a fan as you, I'm rather simple about it. To me, the best player on the floor is the guy who makes the most points, and dominates his opponents. And that guy was not wearing an LSU jersey tonight.

How do you think he's 3rd in the SEC in scoring? Particularly if he has no jump shot.

Statistically he hasn't been and our opponents keep getting into foul trouble. We were able to blow out UK in part because their bigs were in foul trouble early and throughout.

Not many are, no reason to be ashamed.

His style of play is not often going to translate to this type of game. I know that is frustrating because there have been times this year where he takes over and dominates, but he plays team ball a bit too much.

Saying Simmons is a passive player is a legitimate criticism, and saying he had a bad night is a legitimate criticism.

My beef is with the posts that extrapolate tonight into some sort of validation that Simmons is overrated - or something to that affect.

LSU losing a few games =/= Simmons is overrated. Far from it.

shaq had a Hell of a jumper
Shaq was dominant inside. Not competent, not great, but dominant. In trancendent fashion.

I have watched a number of lottery picks come through this program, more than one of them in person. And each and every one of them had some facet of the game where they were simply dominant: Shaq's inside game, offensively (eventually) and defensively; CJ's perimeter game, FTs and ball handling; Tyrus Thomas' athleticism and defense inside; etc. There is nothing about Simmons' game that is that level of dominant. He is without doubt a highly talented inside man and great rebounder, and handles the ball and passes much better than most guys who have his size. And if he had an all around game that was solid or better in all phases, he would be that rare complete package that would be so attractive. But he turns the ball over fairly often, has little to no medium or long range scoring ability, and isn't even a lock at the free throw line (under 75%).

What should be remembered is that none of those other guys were lottery picks as true freshmen, though (although CJ may well have been had he come out his first year). Simmons seems to have an amazing amount of talent, but it is not yet developed to a dominant degree at this level of basketball. So while he does score well, he is hardly unstoppable. And he is a good defender, but hardly a shut-down machine. And he is a good passer and ball handler, but not like having a 6'10" super point guard. And he plays a bit out of control sometimes. Honestly, he really does look like someone who is a bit surprised that his sheer size, talent and athleticism isn't dominating his competition anymore and hasn't quite adjusted to it. When he does, he could very well be a clear #1 draft pick and easily the best player in the country.

But he's just not there yet, imo.
