Didn't he get hurt in the first game? Which would have been his first LSU game considering he redshirted in 2009.

Maybe I was thinking of someone else?

quote:

With him in the lineup in 2010, the Tigers tallied 16 sacks in five games. Though Montgomery was only credited with two of those sacks, he collapsed the pocket regularly to drive the quarterback into the waiting arms of teammates.

But after Montgomery was injured, LSU's sack production dropped. The Tigers managed 18 sacks in eight games without Montgomery.

Sam was all-freshmen that season, despite not even playing half the games. People knew he was a stud.

People seem to forget that Mingo, Montgomery, Minter, Reid, and Brockers were all unproven players going into their sophomore year that year.

We also had several other players that were fairly proven, even career backups like Ron Brooks, Lavar Edwards, etc.

But the weird thing is that the 2011 starters were predominately sophomores and seniors, with some juniors sprinkled in.

The 2016 defense is spread out more with a good bit of seniors, juniors, and sophomores, with the incoming freshman. We have more veterans on this team with comparable levels of talent.

I'm trying hard not to call you stupid, so I'll just say you made a very stupid post. It's HIGHLY unlikely that Valentine will EVER be as good as Brockers. But if he is we will have the best defense in America this year.

Brockers, Mingo, and Reid played in every game in 2010. Montgomery started the first five games before getting injured.

Idk what your definition of "proven" is, but it was pretty clear these guys were talented by the end of 2010.

This defense has a lot of talent and Beckwith coming back is huge.

This defense may be as talented but remember they are learning a new system and are playing different positions from what they have played since coming to LSU. That will lead to busted plays especially at the beginning of the year. They will be better but I wouldn't count on a top 5 defense from a statistical perspective.

I think you can say that we have equal or more talent compared to '11 and no one will disagree with you.

What? They are not as talented as 2011. My god. I think you mean potential.

I'm to lazy to look it up, but at least half of the starters on that 2011 defense are still on NFL rosters I bet.

I dont think there will ever be as much nfl talent, on a lsu defense , as 2011.

We had 8 dlineman,2 lbs, and 7 dbs make a nfl team off that team. Thats fricking insane for 1 team.

if you roll it back a year to 2010, I think they may have technically had more.

take away Freak (2011 freshman), and add Nevis, Shep, PP7, Pep Levingston.

Would be interesting to see how people on this board felt about that 2011 defense at this time five years ago.

I suspect the vibe was very similar.

I think the 2016 defense has as much potential going in as that 2011 squad. But the 2011 squad balled out and maxed their potential. The 2016 squad will have to do the same.

I, for one, am confident the 2016 squad will compare favorably. Not saying I'm correct, but I do feel pretty good about our D right now.

On the DL, you have to start with the fact that we're running a base three man front so it's tough apples to apples. Brockers was a stud, but Logan was a question mark coming in. Josh Downs and Anthony Johnson added depth. In our interior, I think its fair to say that Godchaux is a stud. And at this point, you have to be as optimistic as pre-season about Valentine, Gilmore, Herron and Lawrence.

Arden Key is a star in the making. He'll be what Big Sam should have been. Lewis Neal is better than 2011 start, Ken Adams. We don't have the mega hyped reserve Mingo but our other reserves (Bower, Clark, Sci) seem to compare favorably to Lavar Edwards and Chancey Aghayere.

I love Kevin Minter but Beckwith is better. Lamin Barrow was solid but Divinity could be special. I have a hard time remembering 2011 LBs outside of Minter and Barrow. Seems like thinness at LB is a recurring theme.

Here's a provocative one: Jamal is better at this point in his career than Eric Reid was going into 2011. Here's another: Tre White is a more solid CB than Mo CLaiborne was going into 2011. Brandon Taylor appears to be better than Rickey Jefferson. Of course, there is no one on 2016s secondary who comes close to Badger status. But I will take Tolliver over Simon and the depth - Donte Jackson, Paris, Fulton, Savion, Dwayne Thomas, etc. is a strength that as deep as 2011 was in the secondary, 2016 comes out ahead.

So yeah, the 2011 defense was I think our best ever. But this 2016 squad has the POTENTIAL to come very, very close.

Can't wait!!!!
