On this day in 1984 LSU and Florida tied, 21-21. Florida scored with about 5 minutes left and kicked to tie. LSU then missed a 46 yard field goal with :41 left.

College football through the "CFA" led by a lawsuit by Georgia and Oklahoma was starting to allow teams to play more and more games on live, free television each season. LSU played 4 games on TV in '83, 2 in 1982 and 2 in 1981.Two of LSU's televised games in 1983 were on WTBS cable out of Atlanta.

In 1984 they started their "SEC Game of the Week" which then became JP game of the week, Lincoln Financial game of the wee and now the SEC Network 11:00 am slot. The first SEC game of the week was this LSU at Florida game.

if admin would have just upgraded facilities and shelled out a few bucks back then.

if only....

what if arnsparger coached here for a decade or more? pretty sure we're getting a natty out of that at some point. one of the greatest defensive minds ever.

How the hell did LSU lose to Miss State?? Cost us the SEC Championship. Which we still should have been awarded since Florida was ineligible

That team was pretty banged up by November. We were very fortunate against Ole Miss and Alabama. Our luck ran out vs State.

In November of 1984 the SEC initially declared Florida SEC Champs after their win vs Kentucky to go 5-0-1 but ineligible for the Sugar Bowl. At the SEC Spring meetings in 1985 the SEC stripped Florida of its title and 1984 was "vacated".

Sure would have liked to see what LSU might have done had Arnsparger stayed for ten years or so.

seems your history is a bit sketchy.

arnsparger recruited fairly well, and was a helluva coach.

archer was actually a great coach, but didn't recruit worth a damn.

hallman could recruit, but couldn't coach.

dinardo recruited well, and was a good coach until he refused to get rid of lou tepper.

hope that brings you up to speed.

One slight addition:

I totally read that as "the Asperger era" and all I could imagine was in 1984 there was a bunch of socially retarded kids running around after the first SEC Game of the Week aired.....anyway, carry on

I really don't understand why people think Arnsbarger was so great. He never lost (or tied) fewer then three games a season and he lost to Miami...of Ohio. His teams were complete garbage in bowl games.

No, Archer was not a "great" coach. His program lacked discipline and he played favorites. He was, frankly, not ready for the job.

Nick Saban never lost or tied fewer than three games in his first three seasons at LSU, and he lost to Alabama... Birmingham.

Arsparger was absolutely a great defensive coach. Every coaching staff he was a part of fielded great defenses. You should look up Miami Dolphins "No Name" defense and undefeated season. As for his record at LSU, he did very well with the talent that he had, and played Tom Osborne's Nebraska twice in bowl games, and very good Baylor team coached by Grant Teaff in the other bowl appearance.
