"I am extremely excited about this opportunity and I can't wait to get back there to Baton Rouge and LSU to get started," said Jones Friday evening. "I look forward to the challenges ahead and to have an opportunity to come back and be a part of a special program at LSU. This is certainly a dream come true to return to a place that has so many memories for me. We will hit the ground running on recruiting with five scholarship spots available for this coming year and then in the near future I will begin to put together a championship staff for our program. I want to reconnect with the fans in Baton Rouge that pushed us and gave our basketball team so much energy through the years when I was there as a part of the program."

He says he wants to reconnect with LSU basketball fans. What fans? He needs to say he will create fans and re-build the shell of a program from scratch.

There shouldn't be any fans to create. They should have been and should be with us regardless of if the team is good enough.

“The former players stood up and said we wanted him,” said Rudy Macklin, the star of the 1981 team. “We didn’t have a say in the decision-making process, but we all said — from Shaquille (O’Neal) down to the guys that sat on the bench — that we would like to see Johnny in the job.”
Macklin said Jones is so excited about coming home, he was already out on the recruiting trail hours after accepting the job.
Wednesday marked the start of college basketball’s spring signing period. Prospects have until May 16 to sign.
