Nostalgia LSU thread: BR Kids Clinic

I used to love going to those as a kid. I remember reading the list of MLB'ers who were going to be there while I ate cereal before school on the Friday before.
I also remember my dad taking my to the sporting goods store the night before to get that fresh baseball for autographs.
I remember finding out later thatlst of the players were actual scouts and minor leaguers. I did get Sparky Anderson's signature one year though.
And those McDonalds hamburgers after were always

Is that the BR Kids Clinic? That was going on with real major-leaguers before Skip got there. It used to be held in January before spring training started. Looks like it's been changed to MLB alumni in June.

I actually went to Bertman's baseball camp for a week as an overnight camper and that was fun. Our position (outfield) instructor was Darryl Hamilton, who was at Nicholls at the time. He later had a pretty decent MLB career, starting with the Brewers.

Will never forget Beatle Bailey giving my 9-10 year old group explaing how we'd all be fat slobs at 30 because a few kids were a tad overweight at our age lol. I went a month after the 2000 championship so it may have been the last Bertman summer camp but went to 2 of smokes when i was in high school. Also truly loved hitting in the cages with Turtle Thomas was a much better hitting coach than recruiter.

I coached there for about 3 years. Lots of fun times especially staying up nights with the coaches and them telling all kind of stories. Skip even had me go help Sandy weed her garden. He talked me and my buddies into it by giving us some ginger ale and swimming in his pool.And he did pay extra. lol
When I went to tell Beetle that I couldn't do it anymore due to college/preparing for med school he said ah, that can wait. lol

Good times. I remember going to the clinics at Skip Bertman's batting cage and current/former players were always there. I remember Brian Tallet challenging our pitching group to a contest (last one to miss pitching target wins an icee). It was me vs Tallet as the last two standing and he of course beat me but still bought me an icee. I thought that was the coolest thing ever as a kid I really looked up to those guys. I was probably 10 at the time.

Overnight camper one year, stayed in a room with Skip's nephew. Skip would come get us at night to go get ice cream. Pretty sweet.

Yeah, I went to the overnight camps several times. My first year, one of our coaches was Chad Ogea.
I remember that he preached & preached to us about staying in school. He said that no matter how much money a major league team threw at him, that he'd be back for his final year. About two weeks later, I read in the paper that he had signed with Cleveland.
Coincidentally, I ended-up marrying one of his cousins.

Had a couple of players go, and my sons also. Two of my players went as 11 year olds and came back right before their 12 yr old season. Both broke the rec's record for home runs that year. one had 13, one had 10. And they were regular sized kids, not the suddenly men at 12 years old you sometimes see. as 11 year olds they were average. It was a great season, several times together they would have 3 HRs in one game. This was before all the teams got watered down by all the traveling teams and misc various etc other leagues. great memories. bottom line was that they really learned how to hit at Skips camp and it all came together for them.

My dad petitioned to have me play up with the high school kids when I was in 7th or 8th grade. Kids/coach on my team thought I was suspect. I remember walking out to the back field wherever we were--cold as shite in January. This guy on the other team rolled up in his letter jackets. You couldn't fit another patch on the jacket--that thing was blinged out with all sorts of All-state patches. He thought he was the shite. I took him way yard to deep center 1st at bat. Rounded the bases to 2nd, then just took off my shite and walked off the field and left.

Haha I came all the way from Kansas to one when I was 10 or so. It was Bertman's last year as head coach.
Edit: Nevermind, I came to an LSU baseball camp in the early 2000's, not one of the baseball clinics.

Went after morris hit his hr and met him. Spent many summers up there. Playing in the Box was always

I went in '79/80. Ron Guidry and Bill Russell signed a ball and glove for me. Then went to Skips camp for a few days in 86. Had a ball at that camp. Learned how to hit from Beatle Bailey.

I attended the BR Kids Clinic in the late 50's and early 60's. In those days, there were major league players as instructors. They had younger kids at Alex Box and older kids at Pete Goldsby Field. I was with Richie Ashburn one year and Al Kaline another, as I recall.
