NFL insiders' opinions on JD's NFL future

The following appeared on the Sports Illustrated site today in their "NFL Week 16 Takeaways."

I’ve said it a few different places, and I’ll say it here now—don’t sleep on Jayden Daniels. LSU’s Heisman winner, a veteran of 55 college starts at two schools, was probably considered a Day 3 pick three months ago. Now, I don’t know whether I’d call him a lock to go in the top 10, but I certainly wouldn’t bet against him landing in that range, or higher.
And that was only cemented Sunday morning, when I texted a handful of high-level scouts to get their take on the 23-year-old veteran of five college seasons.
The premise was one I got from one of the ace producers over at NBC Sports Boston. He wanted to know, for our pregame show, whether Daniels had a chance, in the eyes of NFL teams, to catch North Carolina’s Drake Maye as the second quarterback in the draft class of 2024. For a while now the presumption has been that USC’s Caleb Williams would be the first pick in the draft, and Maye would go second. Has Daniels shaken that up?
Depends who you ask.
“It might be going in the opposite direction,” one AFC exec texted me. “Jayden is pulling away from Drake for me. … He makes every throw, his deep accuracy is rare, he’s explosive as a runner but is a pocket passer. It’s like [Deshaun Watson].”
Another AFC exec agreed that there’s “not much“ separation between the two, though they’re “different types of players.” And an NFC exec agreed that the gap is “not big anymore. Jayden’s going to have to go to a team that will build around his skill set, like [Anthony] Richardson with the Colts. But he’s gonna go early.”
One AFC scout dissented from that sentiment, texting, “I think Drake has a Pro Bowl ceiling. His floor is Dak [Prescott, before this MVP month] and his ceiling is [Justin] Herbert. I had Jayden as a quality backup with the ceiling of a system starter, more in-line with the Jimmy [Garoppolo] or Kirk Cousins range. … I like him, his athleticism adds value. I just didn’t love him as a passer.”
Of course, we’ll all know more a few months from now, after these teams get to dig in some more and really get to learn about these kids. But already, the quarterback class looks like it’s strong at the top, has some depth, and should be a really fun one for all of us to dig into.

Drake Maye is pretty much sam howell

Whichever scout thinks Drake Maye’s floor is Dak should probably be fired

This guy has a job as an NFL scout... LMAO

I'm expecting JD to blow people away in the pre-draft process. A lot of these scouts, coaches, and owners haven't really looked at his 2023 tape yet and don't realize how good a passer he was. His measureables will be through the roof. Just in case, I made a small wager on Jayden to be the number one pick.

My reaction exactly. I'd love to know WHY he doesn't like JD as a passer.

Lazy take by those who like to compare players just because they went to the same school.

Which is why I would value Herbstreit’s comments/opinion over any scout at the moment.

Same idiot was probably in love with Josh Allen's "arm strength" (and career 56% completion percentage in college) back in 2018. I swear NFL scouts are some of ther dumbest people in all of sports.

Dude I can’t remember the last time a QB that was considered one of the first 2 to go in the draft not being talked about ALL SEASON.
I kept forgetting he was even playing.
Kinda weird.

It really does depend on where he goes. If someone like the Saints picks him, with a retard for a HC and a clueless nerd for an OC, he will struggle.

I got 20-1. It’s 12-1 now.
Actually first qb taken he is 20-1 which is dumb as if he’s the first pick he’s the first qb too.

I honestly don't get the love for Maye. He's big and strong, I guess, but he's very meh as a QB.
Down the stretch against halfway decent competition, he did nothing to make people notice. Some team is gonna waste a bunch of money and a few years coming to the same conclusion.

What's not to love about him as a passer? There are miles of tape of him going through progressions, looking off safeties, pump faking, stepping up in the pocket, and making accurate 20 yard passes between the hashmarks. The other guy was right about it being important about where he goes to make the most of his running ability, but he's more accurate, more efficient, and takes care of the ball better than Maye. And he did it all against FAR tougher competition. NC's SoS was 63rd. LSU's was 18th.

They talk up these kids between the seasons, so there is a bunch of footage of them praising them to high heaven. So they just stick with it no matter what sometimes. Like Marvin Harrison Jr. Great WR, don't get me wrong. But he's not some generational talent worthy of the knob slobbering they gave him this year.

He can make the throws. He's generally accurate when he makes the throw. The concern is WILL he make the throw?
Whatever NFL team that selects him will likely want him to produce early. On that note, you can't just completely ignore 2022. The biggest criticism was not his ability to make the throw but his ability to process, find the open receiver, then actually throw the ball. That improved tremendously this year. No one will argue against that. But is he going to revert back to 2022 form in a new league, with a new offensive system, with FAR more advanced defenses and better players? That "form" being over-hesitancy. Only this time the backup plan of simply taking off and running for 30+ yards isn't going to be available anywhere as close to as much as it was in college.
If you as a GM believe this year proved Daniels can see the whole field, process the situation quickly, commit to making the right throw immediately, and delivering an accurate pass, then you absolutely take him because he is distinctive from every other available QB in that he has the added dimension of being an incredible runner. The best open field runner I think I've ever seen at LSU (including RBs). That is a killer for opposing DCs because their defense can do everything perfectly and still give up a massive gain because the QB can just slip out and run. But, if you think this season was just the culmination of a 5th year QB who had more experience than just about every opponent he faced...something that won't be the case next year when every opponent will have more experience than him, I guess I can see some reason for hesitation.
Ultimately, Lamar Jackson is the comp. If you have an HC/OC that says "this is our offensive approach and we aren't changing it to fit our QB", then that's probably not good situation for Daniels. But if you have a HC/OC who is willing to fully adapt the offense to Daniels's strengths while he develops into a complete QB (similar to Baltimore with Jackson, Philly with Hurts, even Tua with Miami) then that is a good spot.

Sounds like a great opportunity for you 2. Anonymous message board posters would certainly do better than pro scouts over the long haul

Some teams put out false narratives about a player to keep teams ahead of them from drafting that player.
