I went to Newman, and out of 119, we had 7 go to LSU. Alot of people headed out of state. Same with alot of guys I knew from Jesuit and what not.

you answered your own question when you said where you went to high school and when.....

my first wife went to ben franklin back in the late 60's early 70's and she told me that she was looked down upon because she went to LSU (even though she was a top 100 scholar and had a free ride)......

same sort of thing with your school, i'd be willing to bet......putting admission standards at LSU and continuing to tighten them has changed a lot of perceptions of such folk....

So people from private schools tended to not go to LSU? Shocking. Private schools, especially in NOLA, were notorious for sending kids out of state to show they are "better" than the other schools.

It was basically a snobby behavior from rich kids and their families since they were "Too Good" for LSU.

everybody I know at LSU from Tennessee went to private schools .For every private school kid LSU loses out of state, they get one coming in.

that said, 95 percent of people Ive met at LSU from NOLA went to private school and almost all of them are from the wealthier parts of the city like Uptown and Meterie. Hell, I'd bet money that LSU is 2nd to only Vandy in the sec in number of kids that went to private schools for highschool (Louisiana has a lot- Catholic), so I wouldnt hate on private school kids.

Jesuit is like LSU Prep. The fricking valedictorian came to LSU. It's strange, but awesome, when the friends you made in BR have awesome digs for Mardi Gras

Yeah, but in New Orleans there tends to be a big difference between say, Newman, Country Day, Sacred Heart, etc, and the Catholic schools. For one tuition is much higher, but attitudes tend to be different too.

Well, I appreciate the input and enjoy the discussion. I had many friends that went to other schools (albeit still private, catholic schools) and still many of them went to other state schools.

To me it just seemed that there was a disconnect between NO and LSU. I would compare the attitude of LSU in NOLA (back then) to that of the Saints in BR (up until recently, of course)

I know my own children have one 1 option (rather, no option) when it comes time to "pick" their college.

My observations about NOLA:

Newman/Sacred Heart kids absolutely love Ole Miss and UGA.

Jesuit is the tighest fraternity in the city and that alumni connection outweighs one's college alma mater.

New Orleans is somewhat strange in that people spend more on grammar/hs education than college. I know parents who spent $200K on K-12.

The culture of the rich status whore types have to keep up appearences and part of that is blowing off the lowly in-state school and going out of state.........

You were obviously brainwashed and abused as a child to accept such inferior things. Either that, or your parents were fat frick YATS who loved Tulane and hated LSU. Either way, you have seen the way, the truth and the light. For that you should be eternally grateful.

/j/k/tongue in cheek.....

eta: I don't know, as I went to high school in NOVA, had a 31 ACT, had my choice between VA Tech, James Madison, Texas A&M, West Point and LSU, and I chose LSU. So in all honesty, f*ck the snobs, and lets have a spelling bee and chess match.

With many rich private schools, LSU is not the place to go to school. My girlfriend went to Sacred Heart and she was one of a small minority that went to LSU. The same can be said with my roommate that went to Newman. The Catholic high schools are all pro-LSU as are most of the other schools in the city.

A good number of the New Orleans "rich kids" who have to keep up appearances are the offspring of LSU Alumni.

The Catholic league (Jesuit, Brother Martin, Rummel, Holy Cross, Mount Carmel, etc) pipeline their grads to LSU.

Newman, Country Day, St.Martin's, Sacred Heart, McGehee, etc tend to go out of state. Alabama, Ole Miss, and UGA are popular with the excuse being "I wanted to go somewhere besides LSU." Some view LSU as an extension of high school.

New Orleans places Saints above LSU, but it's not an either-or...they co-exist pretty well. But it's hard to do a night game in BR Saturday night then tailgate for a noon kickoff on Sunday.
