I'd rather them ban the chants.

Cannot wait to hear the reason why. If they are banning props, then what are they gonna do about Monmouth's sideline celebrations. Stupid decision. Just let them enjoy it.

I personally had no issues with it, it didn't harm anything. Some of the stuff I have seen in college softball is pretty funny, but it still doesnt mean they don't take the game seriously, because they actually do.

FloSoftball Story

"The point of emphasis that we're talking about is our coaches are responsible for ensuring that their players are legally equipped and properly attired to reflect a positive image of the game"

FLO SOFTBALL -- (Free Article)

Here's a much longer article from FloSoftball. Seems that this is being enforced in D-2 World Series. They talk about us a lot, but we got it from Florida.... a few years back we didn't wear the hats, but Florida did at Tiger Park and came back to win, so the next day, we had a bunch of the hats and rallied to win... so it was born.

As a retired coach, it never did bother me as long as the yells weren't derogatory to the other team. It kept the enthusiasm going on in the dugout and my teams played a lot more relaxed when they were doing this. One time I asked them about it because I was debating about stopping the props and the girls told me that I always said for them to relax and let me do the worrying and this was their way to do that.... the thing I later realized, it was that many times, it loosened me up to not be so nervous during games.

ETA -- Sorry for same link - we must have been posting at the same time!

My thing is if you are going to do this for softball, then props needs to be banned for all sports.

If the NCAA wants to talk about integrity, let's talk about umpire assignments.... their need to be based on performance, not gender, race, who they know, etc...

I remember in the day when negotiating with another coach on a playoff series and the other coach said she wanted a "mixed" crew.... I thought she meant one umpire from her area chapter and one from mine. I was wrong -- she meant one female and one male. I told her that I didn't care of the gender, race, etc of our umpires, just that I wanted the best and if we were make this "mixed" designation, then we run the risk of not getting the best umpires possible.

We finally agreed to use a neutral chapter and asked for their best 3 -- they sent 2 female and 1 male umpire. Three of the most professional and competent crews I ever had in the playoffs in my career.

what other sport has props?

Baseball/softball just has so little action going on, and so little activity going on in the dugout, that the players have the time and energy to do this kind of stuff.

Yes, it's kinda funny and creative, but it's also silly. The problem, if you allow it, is that it's hard to put limits on it, and it can get out of hand. So I've got not problem with banning it.

Here is a good post from the Ultimate College Softball Forum a few minutes ago

quote:

Props...chants...cheers.

I don't care what the players do in the dugout as long as:
* They are not being disrespectful to the opposing team
* They are not being disrespectful to the opposing team's fans
* They are not being off color or vulgar
* They are truly engaged in the game and what is happening on the field

Keep in mind that some of these girls in the dugout devote 4 years to the team - physically (workouts, practices, games, etc) and emotionally (won't even list those examples) - without having the opportunity to contribute by actually PLAYING on a consistent basis.

I admire the commitment of those girls tremendously. In addition, don't discount the psychological boost that the "dugout girls" give to the players on the field.

Yes....the games should be taken seriously.
Yes....all of us want the sport of softball to be taken seriously.

But at the end of the day......the girls devoting 4 years to the game they love and the team they are a part of...the girls putting in all the time and effort.... should have a say what is appropriate and what isn't.

How about we ask them instead of asking each other?

ETA -- These aren't my words, but a good commentary that I thought we could discuss here as I said above.

Evidently you have never attended a weekend series vs an SEC rival at the Park. Sad.
