Not a baseball purist should catchers remove the mask on a bunt play? It seemed his masked spun a little on his turn to throw and possibly blocked his view. Then 1st base made a not-so-great attempt to come off the bag and get to the throw. Then Jones made a half-assed backup attempt on a throw on the second base side of 1st and didn't get himself into position.
All 3 led to the runner advancing and scoring.

Which was the worst effort/mistake.

1. Catcher
2. 1st baseman
3. 2nd baseman

Ross had no play at first. Should have held the ball.

Ross. Terrible throw. JJ tried to get to the ball. Not many 2nd basemans are able to back up that play. RF is the back up for that play.

Pretty obvious you haven't been around the game much. The throw was just bad, Ross had no time to ditch mask and it usually doesn't move until head jerks to a stop after throw is made. Katz making every effort together to throw and Jones has all momentum moving toward foul territory as errant throw goes by him.

The runner was out with an accurate throw

Ross' 1st mistake was trying to field the ball then spin around and make that throw in one motion. If turns to his right instead of twirling around he would've either made a better throw or seen that he didn't have a play. Nola actually had the better angle.

Catchers throw down to second routinely and accurately with their mask rotating sideways, so the mask is no issue. He just rushed the throw and it went wide. What is not apparent on TV is his angle of throw to first. With a runner the window is very small.

I'd watch the replay again. The runner was on the bag when the throw got there.

IMO Ibarra had the best play.

I think Nola is just as much to blame as Bregman on the other play. He plunked him. If he doesn't do that, perhaps the guy doesn't get on base.

On this one, it was on Ross.

2nd baseman backs up that play not the rfielder... 1st baseman charges in or goes back to base, 2nd baseman goes toward 1st base and backs up if 1st baseman is on the bag for the throw... imo, Katz and JJ did poor defensive jobs on that play... runner should have been held to first!

Too hard to tell. Look at all the debate back and forth on whether he was there or not. You can't definitively say whether or not he would have been safe or out with an accurate throw. The throw was no where near first base, so had the throw been accurate, you don't know when exactly the throw would have gotten to Katz' glove. It would have been VERY close.

IMO Ross had the worst game defensively of his career, but not the reason we lost.

Wrong, this is not how catchers are taught to make that play. He did everything correct up to the point of the errant throw.

Exactly. Those saying no play don't know what they watched.

Exactly again. Every catcher in the world is taught a bunt down the left field line is a step over, barehand, spin and throw.

Why do people talk about stuff of which they know precisely nothing?

Ross did everything right, but make the throw. This was a sure out in most situations. A terrible bunt for a hit attempt that just cleared the home plate dirt. Everything was done correctly as far as positioning and backup lanes.
