but Les will not throw him under the bus as Nick would be doing right now
ST play can only get better

Well frick. All they have to do is look where the return guy is standing to catch it. You would think when he isn't on the left side, our guys would know to drift back to the right.
Regardless, the safety isn't supposed to get tied up in that. He's just there to run down a breakaway

The problem with that is, some teams do those fake catching returns. One guy pretends he is going to catch the ball when really the ball is on the other side of the field.

I'm going to go ahead and say the reason we suck on kickoff returns is mainly Chavis' fault.
The best guys at making the stops on kickoffs have usually been linebackers that don't start. Well, we don't really have any of those guys since we are so slim at the position.
Instead we've got WR's, RB's, and CB's all over the kickoff coverage, when it should be LB's, Safety's and any small DE's that are fast.
There's too many Welter like players on the kickoff coverage, and when i say that, i mean they seem content with running into someone and letting them block them to see where the runner will go, instead of blowing someone up or going around them and attacking the ball carrier.
in Les' words: There's a lack of want to tackle the ball carrier.
we should have kickers that can kick into or out the endzone, and we should have aggressive and intense players that want to kill someone on the kickoff coverage team. It used to be it was a privilege to be on the kickoff team.

Is it me, or does this sound like Les-speak for "I've stripped Peveto of his duties and I'm coaching the ST now, but I'd never call out one of my coaches publicly"? Or is that just wishful thinking?

Sounds kind of like it. Peveto can still recruit and he also helps Steele supposedly with coaching the linebackers/defense.

Seriously, who talks like this? Why not just say we worked on his approach, or motion or technique and we expect he will kick the shite out of the ball or we expect to see the ball go out of the back of endzone, or we need a new kicker because he isn't getting it done, or we might have to change kickers or special teams coaches. Just something that does not need an interpreter.
