it is my understanding that miles' buy out is...

1-15 million over 8 yrs till January '16
2-12.9 million over 6 yrs till Jan. '17
3-12.9 million over 4 yrs till Jan. '18
4-last year of contract it's about 5 million over 1 yr; contract ends in 2019

it will actually cost more per year to fire him over the next four years than this past year even tho the total amount is less.

this means that we either bite the bullet and pay the buy out or we bite the bullet and let the contract run out or we extend his contract.

letting the contract run out will KILL RECRUITING as most quality recruits aren't going to sign to play for LSU if the coach is known to be leaving. if the higher ups aren't going to allow our boosters to buy him out then our only option, to save the program, IS TO EXTEND HIS CONTRACT.

Les Miles owns LSU. Alleva agreeing to this shite is madness. I read where Jimbo Fishers contract buyout was only 5 million (and that was with the great Sexton as agt).

i'll admit that I don't know what other coaches buy outs are but if they are like Fishers we got hosed by miles agt. we have les miles as our football coach until HE decides to step down.

what a dangerous situation; unless he continues to recruit at a high level he is in a position to ruin LSU'S football program whether we extend his contract or not.

Miles will be here until he retires in 2020.

Lsu should be Virginia Tech level then.

I predict this.

After this Miles-firing/hire-Fisher cluster frick ...

Once Miles starts his shite-show offense, mistakes, BDP frick-ups, Steele porous defenses, etc. ... next year--

There is going to be some terrible anger unleashed toward LSU football, Alleva, and Alexander in Red Stick City.

Am I wrong? Aren't the coaches buyout and university buyout two different things? A coach basically receives his contract but if he leaves for another job there is a buyout to the respective school.

Jimbo's buyout and the Miles buyout for example. Jimbo's contract expiration might be up soon too.

if the team doesn't perform at a high level next year, I agree that we will indeed have a "festering wound" that will hurt the program and we will have to fire him because the fan base will quit going to games (a la Hallman days). even if we have a really good '16 season and follow it with a shite show '17 season this could happen. the segment of the fan base that hates Miles (and has since day 1) will grow.

I think many fans, not just the "always hated miles" crowd, are kind of on "alert". miles is on probation with them. change is uncertain, risky and expensive but we need to be ready to pull the trigger if Miles "coasts".

and we gotta let the next coach go to Arkansas if his agt demands a ridiculous buy out like miles got.

Who negotiated this deal?
Who hasn't replaced the PR/media relations department in the athletic department?
Who leaked the firing/coach search info to the media?

Houston we have a problem!

If they give him a raise or extend him I will really be done, that is the most absurd thing I've ever heard.

Quality post though, I do agree miles has LSU bent over a barrel now more than ever, if only the meddling wouldn't have taken place we'd have Jimbo right now and all be excited about the future.

Just gotta hope the boosters will be willing to pay up next time they decide they want to fire mile. Everyone keeps telling me he's a great coach and will easily be able to find another job though...so can't we count on another program hiring him and offsetting the buyout?

Looks like the Jimbo ship has sailed, but we just need to do like UGA and fire Miles after next season with no leaks. I''d be on board with almost any new coach coming in.

It's my understanding that in the case of a buyout, that amount would be lessened by what he earns at his next job, and that his contract requires him to make a legitimate effort to find a job. If that's the case, I wouldn't worry so much about paying the full amount of the buyout.

We never were even close to having Jimbo. I believe if they had Jimbo Miles would be gone

UGA came out smelling like a rose with MR getting hired by Miami.
I would bet some big 10 team would love to hire Les.

Grandad, your analysis is all screwed up. First, Miles' buyout isn't as expensive as you list, because his salary at his new job gets subtracted. Second, your assumption that because the cost per year goes up, that we didn't fire him this year means we won't until his contract runs out, is just wrong.

Here is what is going to happen. Miles will either perform well enough next year to quiet the uprising, or he won't. If he does, he'll still have three years on his contract, so it won't be extended. More than likely we'll arrange a coach-in-waiting deal.

If he has a bad year he'll be replaced. As you point out, contractually this would necessitate a $12.9 mm buyout. Instead, there will be a negotiated buyout. In my opinion it will be about $7 or 8 million dollars. This is because you'd subtract about $1.5 million per year of Miles' new job salary.
