MBB: Lack of fundamentals, where does the buck stop?

We go back and forth on this board about who is "at fault" for sloppy play. Either Jones couldn't coach a toddler through a toy store or the players forgot how to basketball. But saw these states retweeted by Doucet this morning:
This is an honest question because I've never played organized basketball, but who is it on to improve in these areas? If you have a player that's generally poor at FT shooting, is it a hard to impossible task to improve on that, even with repeated drills? Does this indicate not enough emphasis put into it at practice? At some point, are fundamentals not given as much time anymore because of an assumption that players at that level should have it down?
Kind of rhetorical because I know you can always be improving your game, ESPECIALLY at the fundamental level. Being smart with the ball with passes and dribbling. Not enough time at the line at practice? So what's not happening at LSU? Is the philosophy to expect the talent to overcome these deficiencies?

With the limited practice time? Absolutely. That is up to each individual player.
Quarterman is a complete headcase at the FT line, and when your PG struggles from the line, especially one that dominates the ball, you're going to have a below average FT team.
I mean you have some players who play extremely intelligent on offense and tend to protect the ball. Simmons, Victor, Hornsby, and Patterson all seem to play within themselves. Blakeney is night and day from when he got here. It looks like
I think the real question is what can you do about Quarterman. He can win you games, but he can also lose you games. He's not a true PG/facilitator
The closest thing he's had to a true PG since he's been here is actually Simmons. It may be time to bring Q off the bench again

Free throw shooting is terrible but get out of here with that ridiculous turnover comparison. We play fast. Of course we have more turnovers per game now. It happens. Would you rather go back to games in the 50s, never winnand have less turnovers? Jacque Doucet is a complete dumbass if he tweeted this.

We don't tend to turn it over in transition. Pretty great at it.
We tend to turn it over on some lazy lob pass. We also need to throw it in the paint hard and fast. Quarterman lobs that one in too after telegraphing it for 10 minutes.
He's the most frustrating good player I've ever watched.

It wasn't specifically about this year, more of the trend of this team of the Jones/Johnson years.

Who were our PGs for all the years?
Did we have won that shot +80%?

More possesions usually equal more turnovers.
Jacques should go cover tcu if he'd like to watch that style basketball again.

Yea I get that, but we still give way too many away on idiotic plays

Why is Jacques a complete dumbass for posting stats between two different coached teams?? Maybe your the dumbass that doesn't like the facts?

He already explained it, can you read?.
We have a lot more possessions than under Trent and run a fast paced game. Turnover % would be a better indicator.
If we're getting 10 more possessions/game, but have the same # of turnovers despite running a faster pace... Do the math

This is an awful post. We've basically always been bad at FT's. You can go back to the Brady days.
And people with no clue about basketball just pick out a stat and run with it. Turnovers per possession we are actually an EXCELLENT team.

So why are some teams good at the free throw line, and other bad? I don't mean from season to season, I mean some coaches have good free throw shooting teams, and others seem to always be iffy at the line. One would assume that practice organization, and what a coach focuses his time on leads to that.

It's amazing that schools have such identities that persist through coaches.

amazingly enough our best free throw shooting team by percentage was the one that had the best free throw shooters on it...'09....GO FIGURE!
Kind of a dumb thread. Shooting can obviously be improved but it's more of an off season type of improvement than in in season coaching deal. the only influence a coach has is forcing his players to shoot free throws when there exhausted to simulate more of an in game type of environment....but even then there's no real evidence that this even works.

Exactly
And I think Simmons let the home crowd get to his head. He's a good FT shooter for his position. Got a little too amped up

I think our free throw % is bad because our worse free throw shooter is doing alot of the shooting, Victor is at 53%.
Also tims free throw has gone down a decent bit from last year to this year.

Absolutely...when I heard the crowd taunting him I figured that would sort of happen....it's expected especially from a freshman. There's a reason why basketball has the biggest home court advantage over any other sport.
