Part of the problem, imo, is that Miles kind of wants to change and kind of has the team practicing a somewhat changed offense.
Like one of the other SEC coaches was quoted saying about LSU's offense: the play arena league ball and throw it all over the place in spring, then run the same old school Big 10 running game when fall rolls around. (a bit schizo)
I really do think they've been practicing some new concepts. They're just not fully committed to it, so they're not good at it. And that's taken away from being good at what they used to be good at. Neither the constantly shuffled offensive line nor the offense itself has a true identity at this point.
Only way it changes this year is if Miles genuinely cedes control to Cam. I think Cam could call a much better game if Miles didn't influence his calls. Regrettably, that's very unlikely to happen. Miles is going to believe in his heart he's willing to change because he's somewhat practiced other things, but he's always going to want to sprinkle in the old I form run plays. That's his crutch and he won't let the offense walk or run without it.

about 3 years ago (ish) when we hit a brick wall against bama in the title game, i said it wouldn't matter if we had walter payton, bo jackson, and jim brown as our running backs. when a good defense of a well coached team KNOWS you will run and KNOWS you cant throw even if you wanted to - it really doesnt matter who your backs are.

I'm starting to believe Les does WANT to change and have a more effective offense, but this all he knows. He's tried to learn from spread teams but he just can't grasp the concepts, so he reverts back to what Bo taught him in the 70's

This is somewhat true. But even service academies have a lot of success running when it's known that they'll run to an even greater degree than LSU. The difference is that they have a cohesive system that allows for some degree of unpredictability within the framework of their offense.
LSU is trying to maintain their old I form identity... And they're trying to develop this spread alter ego. That won't work.
If LSU wants offensive success, they need to unify their concepts into one cohesive system, from which variety can unpredictably emerge. They can't sort of run some predicable I form... then run some very different spread plays. There's a lack of cohesion in trying to run different sets of plays from different styles of offense. Especially when you run the same small group of I form... then the same small group of spread plays. That's varied in a way, but not unpredictable. And there may be a ton of plays that might stem off the base concepts, but when the opening plays from both sets don't have instant success, it's all the harder to open the offense up, and you end up not knowing which approach to abandon.

At the end of the day, you can't execute against 8 or 9 in the box. It creates a cluster frick with little room for a ball carrier to move.
