I've heard so many times during the season from the Baton Rouge sports "media" that all you need is 2 quality starters for post season success and patchwork the rest. Well that didn't work out.

Ahhh. Thankfully I don't have to listen to those hacks. I know people on this board, some of whom aremore knowledgeable about college baseball as a whole than the local BR media, weren't always very happy with not going three deep on the rotation.

I do think the point Guilbeau makes about this is a good one.....throwing 9 pitchers against Alcorn State and Northwestern State every Wednesday night in March and saying "wow, what a strategy!" because it worked can mistakenly lead one to believe that such a strategy could work against good competition consistently.

I actually don't mind that strategy every once in a while. I did mention in another thread that I would like to see Godfrey as the mid week starter next year to load up on innings and help develop control. But for weeks when we have two mid week games, one of them could be used for wholestaff to keep people sharp and keep relievers auditioning for weekend roles.

ETA: You don't have to look to hard to find limitations of the wholestaff strategy though. You're asking 7 or 8 guys to be on top of their game that day instead of just 3 or possibly 4. And if one of the 8 is off and it's a bad night at the plate, you're screwed.

In mid week games against Alcorn or northwestern, they should be sending Godfrey or Person out and saying give me 7 solid innings. Not inflating egos by letting everyone pitch 1 1/3 good innings.

Oh really. How do you know a writer is an ill informed douche? When he can't be bothered to get even the easiest facts correct:

"Mac Marshall, a 21st round pick of Houston and another gold piece of that recruiting class, could have started Thursday, too. But he decided at the last minute to not attend LSU and opted for a junior college instead, so he could be drafted this month."

Wrong.

I think he is pretty accurate, we failed to develop a consistent third and fourth arm and it cost us.

Pitching isn't what cost us, our hitting is why we left Omaha early.

You people are such jackasses about Guilbeau. I don't agree with everything he writes either, but that was a pretty good and fairly accurate summary of what the pitching situation was.

Ok who could have played that role. Latz was hurt, Marshall left, Bouman become terrible, and Bain never got comfortable. Throw in that Godfrey couldn't get his command under control and what could they possible have done differently. LSU couldn't develop a third starter, its not that they didn't try. I agree give some more midweek starts to possible starters but do you really think we had that guy on the roster this year.
