The first thing to go were the longer practices - much to the joy of players. Orgeron replaced Miles' longer practices with shorter times spent on the field and more time spent studying the opponents and in the film room.

quote:

Orgeron also made it a point to bring back former LSU players into the mix as much as possible. Former players were invited back to join the team on the Tiger Walk prior to games and also are welcome to practice at any time

quote:

Orgeron made a big change. Last fall, he promoted graduate assistant Dennis Johnson to a full-time coach - a move that's paid off as much off the field as it did on the field. Johnson, or "Meatball" as he's affectionately known, has been one of the top recruiters in the SEC and has been the lead recruiter for freshman K'Lavon Chaisson and Tyler Shelvin as well as 2018 four-star commitments Dare Rosenthal and Jarrell Cherry, among others.

quote:

The hiring of Canada signaled a fundamental shift from the between-the-tackles offenses that LSU fans became accustomed to under Miles.

Following National Signing Day, LSU parted ways with wide receivers coach Dameyune Craig and running backs coach Jabbar Juluke. Orgeron replaced them with Mickey Joseph, a New Orleans native who previously coached at Louisiana Tech, and Tommie Robinson, who picked up the title of assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator.

"These guys, the first thing I said when we had our first team meeting, I told the whole staff they are here because I chose them and I trusted them," Orgeron said. "That was the truth. I expect them to do their job. I give them that expectation and right now, some of them are going beyond my expectations. They are working well as a staff. The team is jelling together."

The issue of "trust" and D. Craig keeps surfacing, directly or indirectly.
what happened that led to his firing?
where is he now?

Results will ultimately gauge whether O will be HC for a while or not. He's aware of this, and seems like they are all confident that they have a solid team this year. Will be tough to beat teams with the same talent as LSU but having veterans along with it. The Tigers will get to that point IMHO with O.

I'm excited to see this team. They keep mentioning changes on ST so I hope they are much more aggressive there, along with creating TOs, fumble recoveries, INTs, blocked FGs, and punts. Can't wait!

That may be the biggest unknown with this team. I don't think anyone outside of the staff ha any clear picture on what to expect on ST. That was what helped put us over the top in 2011. It turned around the Arkansas game and the SECT game vs Georgia. I don't expect to find the next Honey Badger, but a collection of players that can at least make our ST above average would be nice.

Not sure exactly but we lost Travis Etienne and Marvin Wilson last year late in the process simply because somebody else out hustled us. I have the mental image of CEO talking to his recruiting staff repeatedly about these guys and them assuring him everything was A-OK... up until they committed elsewhere and then he fired DC and reassigned JJ. I dont think he trusted their work ethic for recruiting.

For one thing I don't think he was a very good WR's coach. Tony Ball sucked when he took over after Henry went to the NFL. I don't think there was any improvement under Dameyune.

The final straw happened on February 1st - signing day. LSU had a JUCO WR committed since 2016. I think it was Stephen Guidry. On signing day the LSU staff found out Guidry would not qualify. Craig was not only recruiting Guidry but he was promoted to recruiting coordinator when CEO was named interim HC.

One of the main responsibilities of a RC is keeping up with prospects - especially commits - grades. To not know a JUCO player is not going to qualify until signing day and burning a scholarship offer is a BIG no-no.

If anyone ?'s Os recruiting job last year they just aren't looking at it objectively. Our winningest HC n history who was a household name left. To close out with the talent he did was amazing. I've followed recruiting for 10 years and this freshman class may be the best I've seen. These kids are freaks! Just about every one of em look like they've been in an sec program for 2 years.

It's funny how you want to blame anyone but O for our recruiting frick ups of late.

You did the same for the Florida nightmare loss.

We loss seven of ten of the top guys in the state this year. You can cover up all you want, but that's on O.

You also have to give him credit for going out and getting better players at those same positions. CEO's #7 recruiting class included the #1 safety and #1 inside linebacker. Why settle for lower rated players just because they are from in-state.

Doesn't matter what you type the No-O's have their mind made up that he will be a failure and nothing short of 15-0 every year, 6 National Championships will do.

The Marvin Wilson situation was weird. Chaisson was helping recruit him. O was in constant contact and Wilson seemed all but a lock. I'm not sure there was anything else that could have been done ABOVE BOARD to get him to Baton Rouge. FSU may have had a better pitch in the end and I usually don't subscribe to conspiracy theories, but that one just seemed to be very strange.

So why didn't O know that his grades could possibly be a problem? O was RC until the Auburn game. Grade problems don't just pop up overnight.

Oh ok, that's right... O should've known about the grade problems, because Guidry committed when O was RC.
