Who: LSU Tigers (13-4, 2-2) @ Florida Gators (10-7, 3-1)
When: Tuesday, January 20 - 6:00PM
Where: Stephen C O'Connell Center (12,000, 58th NCAA) - Gainesville, FL
How:
***TV: ESPN (Super Tuesday)
***Radio: 98.1FM
***Stream: ESPN3.com

With 10 minutes remaining against Texas A&M on Saturday, it looked like LSU was destined to start SEC play 3-1. Unfortunately, LSU struggled to finish the game and fell 67-64 to the Aggies after shooting only 1/13 from three in the second half. In Florida's last game, they never had a lead at Georgia and fell by 12. Yet, this is a game that both teams desperately need.

Florida likes to play at a methodical pace. LSU on the other hand have the sixth fastest pace in the country. Which style of play wins out in this one? LSU should hope to speed the game up, because Florida is very capable of shutting down LSU in the halfcourt.

Projected Starting Lineups:

Florida has won the last six meetings between the two teams and are the home team, yet LSU has reason to be confident. Florida already has two home losses. One to Miami and one to UCONN. Also, while the SEC has historically been a very tough league to win on the road, home teams are currently only winning 60.7% of the time, which makes it only the 12th toughest conference to win on the road. Last year, home teams won 69.8% of the time.

Matchup to Watch:

The past few years, this game has been a matchup of power vs power with Johnny O'Bryant and Patric Young going at it in the post. This year's biggest matchup comes from the perimeter as two of the top shooting forwards in the league collide. Florida's Dorian Finney-Smith leads Florida in scoring (13.9), rebounding (5.4), and three point percentage (40%), while LSU's Jarell Martin leads the Tigers in scoring (16.6) and is secod on the team in rebounding (8.9).

Keys to the Game:

Protecting Possession: LSU has been careless on offense when it comes to turnovers. Florida turns opponents over on over 23% of their possessions (21st NCAA). The Tigers will be in for a long night if they cannot keep possession.

Transition Points: LSU occasionally struggles in halfcourt sets, especially against a zone which I'm sure Florida will run against an LSU team struggling to hit threes. LSU has been good in transition and must take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves.

Protecting the Paint: Florida shoots 52% from inside the three point line. Jordan Mickey has been a shot blocking machine in SEC play and needs to continue to make guards question themselves in the lane. Winning the paint is an absolute must to win in the O'Connell Center.

Prediction:

Florida 68, LSU 64

Hope you're wrong about this one SOUTH. We need to go 2-0 this week, though winning two on the road might be next to impossible

This is a very important match up for the Tigers if they want to make the NCAA Tournament, have to come away with a WIN

So far I've picked us to lose 2 games.... West Virginia and Ole Miss.

It's a huge week for LSU. I think the Florida game is more of an opportunity than anything else. They aren't as good as they've been recently, but they have played a very tough schedule and are much better than their 10-7 record indicates.

They're 10 point favorites over us, which scares the crap out of me. Was hoping for a 4-5.5 line.

I was expecting about 8 points. 10 is too many in my opinion.

Johnny Jones' all-time conference record as a head coach is 100-99. I'm afraid he'll be an even .500 as a head coach after tonight.

Disturbing trend with such a sizable sample

LSU Coaches Conference Records through first three years:

CC Stroud (1913-1916) 9-12
Harry Rabenhorst (1926-1928) 14-13
Jay McCreary (1957-1960) 8-34
Press Maravich (1967-1970) 16-38
Dale Brown (1972-1975) 21-33
John Brady (1997-2000) 18-30
Trent Johnson (2008-2011) 18-30
Johnny Jones (2012-present) 20-20

Johnny Jones needs just 1 more win to become LSU's most successful conference play coach in first three years...

People are delusional.

To me this game could be the game that spearheads the Tigers to a season that ends in the NCAA Tournament or if we lose to the NIT again. Geaux Tigers

We seem to win a lot of games we're not supposed to, but lose ones we should definitely win. By that logic, we should be coming away with a W tonight. Hope it holds, at least for now.

Well, what was your point? I know you love to shite on the basketball program, but compare apples to apples...

Johnny Jones was 51-35 over his last 5 years at UNT in conference.

edit: Or was it just a smartass way of saying we lose...

I think you took it the wrong way and may be a little touchy as this is your baby. Wasn't being a smartass and I wouldn't call predicting a loss to Florida shitting on the program. A program you know I support way more than the average lsu fan

Just pointing out his overall conference record may end up being 100-100 as a head coach.

I think this week Jones faces the two (IMO) best X & O coaches in the league (Donovan and Stallings). That said, LSU has as much talent as UF in their top 6 players and more talent than Vandy. That alone gives LSU an opportunity to be in both games on the road. Can they play smart basketball?

I predicted Florida to win also. That's not the shitting I was talking about. Obviously trying to make the connection to Jones being an even 500 coach makes him seem less than good enough for LSU. You can come back and say you were just "pointing out" that he will be 100-100 but come on man... I know that was meant as a burn.

The timing of all this Johnny Jones hate has started to ware me down I guess. People have looked at 0 historical references to basketball. While I think LSU should have won the Texas A&M game, I am not gonna act like Jones is shite. His teams have improved in each of his 3 years from the previous year. I have no doubt the program is going in the right direction. No doubt at all.

I don't either

100-100 is just an interesting number is all. I wouldn't have said anything if it was 78-78. Swear that wasn't a burn.
