This has probably been done before, so apologies if redundant.

SEC West Finishes
LSU | Alabama
1992 6 | 1
1993 4 | 2
1994 4 | 1
1995 4 | 3
1996 2 | 1
1997 2 | 6
1998 5 | 3
1999 6 | 1
2000 2 | 6
2001 1 | 3
2002 4 | 1
2003 1 | 5
2004 2 | 4
2005 1 | 3
2006 3 | 4
2007 1 | 5
2008 3 | 1
2009 2 | 1
2010 3 | 4
2011 1 | 2
2012 2 | 1
2013 3 | 2
2014 5 | 1

Overall avg: 2.9 | 2.7
Avg before Saban: 4.1 | 2.9
Hallman avg: 4.7
DiNardo avg: 3.8
Saban avg: 2 | 2.1
Miles avg: 2.4

The division split happened in Curley's second year, so his number is slightly skewed. LSU finished 6th in the 10 team SEC in 1991. TAM joining the SECW in 2012 is another small skew factor, but not terribly significant.

LSU is basically a 3rd place team overall, and Bama just a bit better. Saban had 2 1st place and 2 2nd place finishes at LSU in five years, and 4 1st place and 2 2nd place finishes at Bama in eight years. Miles has had 3 1st place and 2 2nd place finishes at LSU in ten years.

Saban's average at LSU and Bama is virtually equal. Miles is just slightly behind. FWIW

ETA: Had the positions reversed in 1996. Fixed now. Also, I'm not taking into account "NCAA adjustments" for Bama. LOL

I agree that Saban is better than Miles. Doesn't bother me. I don't agree that Bama is inherently much, much better than LSU. We have the resources and facilities to compete with them. We have in the past and we will again. Meanwhile, I thought the numbers were interesting. My life is fine, BTW.

4 >>> 1 no argument there. And if Miles wasn't arrogant to a fault that could well be 3 > 2 and a lot closer. I'm not trying to argue a case for Les here. I'd take Saban over him all day every day. I was just surprised at how the numbers fell out and thought some others in here might find it interesting as well.

How do you have LSU 1 and Alabama 2 for 1996? We tied with them for first and they won the tiebreaker on head to head and played in Atlanta.

Saban and alabama was gifted the national championship after the 2011 season. I don't give a shite about who had the "better loss" between alabama and Oklahoma State. The year that the Oklahoma Sooners went to the National Championship after getting their arse kicked in the Big 12 championship game, there was plenty of people nationwide that were mad that they were chosen to go without being their conference's champion.

Alabama didn't even win the SEC's western division, yet they jumped the Big 12 champions who had the same win/loss record, played more ranked teams and had a stronger SOS. That was bullshite.

Les Miles and LSU (and Oklahoma State) got screwed that year!

They weren't handed the trophy with a bow on top. They had to go to New Orleans and play the game.

There was little chance we'd beat Alabama again. That's why our win, on the road, that season, should've meant something.

I don't care how good Bama is (which is why that win should've counted) and they are good. We beat them. Period. Bring in the next team in line.

Bama would've still played in a BCS bowl.

The chances of a team beating a team from their conference, their side of the conference, twice in a season is minimal.

Purely speculative since it rarely ever happens. What's the difference between playing a west team twice and an east team twice?

Some in the west don't play some teams in the east in a season, let alone twice.

Not trying to get into a big thing about it but I think we can agree on that. Some teams in the west don't play teams in the east, sometimes for a couple of seasons.

Our schedule, that year, was insane and we beat everyone. The win against Bama should've meant more than it did.

That's all I'm saying.

No argument here!

ETA: Except like someone else said they did have to show up and play the game. Miles did not adjust, however, and we got humiliated. You'd figure after the 9-6 OT scrape earlier in the year we would have had something put together for the natty game other than the same old same old Saban would be ready for. Nope. Since that game my level of emotional investment has definitely degraded.

Yeah, I didn't include the "NCAA adjustments" so like I said FWIW. We know most of Bama's 10,000 national championships should be vacated, right?
