With all the referee uproar in advance of Bama week, I was curious about the actual penalty stats in LSU-Bama games.

Alabama has had more penalties than LSU 4 times in the last 16 games

Alabama has had more penalty yards 3 times in the last 16 games

Since 2000, Alabama averages 4.4 penalties for 36 yards while LSU averages 6.6 penalties for 55.9 yards

What does it all mean? Saban-coached teams draw fewer penalties? Bama bias?

I'm over it. Was just wondering if the actual numbers justify any amount of bitching.

it is not always the penalty or amount but rather when the penalty is called- and if it possibly impacts the game

e.g. a pass or interception caught clearly in bounds but ruled out of bounds- that could impact the outcome of the game

There is not statistic for this

I've come to the realization that it is not going to stop. There will always be some conspiracy theory about this... So I guess if you can't beat em, join em:

I agree, and as soon as they start calling it down the middle, I think the fans will.

LSU has been a highly penalized team pretty much across the board for the entire Miles era.

If there was a "spike" when LSU played Bama then you might be onto something, but there isn't.

A championship team always must overcome adversity. Sure, there might be and probably is some bias against LSU and for Alabama, but a championship team always overcomes adversity. If we have to beat a red/white team and a black/white team in 1.5 weeks, then so be it. When we win, we'll undoubtedly know we can beat any team in the land.

Can you run the numbers again on a per play basis?

Maybe LSU committed more infractions than Alabama did.

And under Saban...

Bama's style of D should lead to a lot of penalties. Press man coverage with blitzing usually does at every level

And we are 9-7 in those games. Aside from a few very bad or questionable calls, it really hasn't affected the game. We also have to remember that the vast majority of those calls are probably legit.

The new commish is a Bama shill. Hand picked by the REC to maintain the status quo.

Interesting but you would needd to provide the penalty data from all games played over the same timeframe prior to drawing any conclusions from this.
