Best thing might be to play some of the younger guys after we lose another couple series. Start thinking about next year.

I've been coaching or preparing coaches through univetsities for 59 years. A while back a stellar west Tennessee coach told one of my classes, "if you build your team on potential you will soon be unemployed. You build your team on results!" This baseball team is high on potential and so far, very disappointing on results.

Coach Speak Philosophy. One of those things that sounds smart on the surface but really isn't that smart but does have a ring of truth to it. When a coach recruits kids out of high school they are recruiting them based on the results they had while in high school. The results they had in high school shows they have potential to make it to the next level. Sometimes it doesn't pan out.

Take Little for example. He was recruited to come here based on the results he had at Vanderbilt.

The moral of the story is all recruits are recruited based on potential.

I love how people just keep insisting the team will get hot and march on through to Omaha like it’s that easy

Posted this in another thread but it applies here

How are you determining this massive potential vs what you’re actually seeing with your own eyes? At some point, you have to be realistic.

Or are you the type that will, when lsu misses the sect, still be saying, “I don’t know what happened, they had such great potential”

We still have 6 series to go. We have been through the murderers row with a very inexperienced team. We have 3 wins and 9 losses. I believe we can win 11-12 of the remaining 18 remaining games. .500 in SEC league play easily gets us in the tournament. This is not Polly Anna. Less walks and HBP, more quality strikes when ahead in the count, and a little better timely hitting and we can do it.

This team is not as talented as we thought. The 2022 disaster recruiting class is destroying this team right now. Look back on it and understand why. You can definitely argue some of the talent on last year's team has regressed though and I do think they should be much better than they are right now.

This team should not be worse than the 2011 team and they are so it's partially on coaching as well. Pitching hasn't lived up to expectations and is a disaster. Shame we didn't have guys like Shores available this year.

Every SEC team we have played has more talent.

Just because they are all underachieving doesn’t mean they don’t have talent. Just about all of these guys we’re very highly rated

Maybe, but LSU's limited NIL funds are now being directed toward football in order to keep up with SEC competition. Look at the 2025 football recruiting class for an example. Baseball is unlikely to get anymore game changing transfers, so don't expect a trip to Omaha anytime soon.

Not trying to be argumentative. You are absolutely correct you recruit based upon potential and that potential has been reinforced by results demonstrated in competition or at camps. Once that person puts on the uniform, they earn the right to play by results in practice and game performance. We're seeing players that were recruited because of presumed high potential not produce to those expectations. Whether the chasum of difference between potential and results is mental, physical, or both is yet to be determined.

If you have potential, you ain't got much.

Honestly, our batting and relief pitching is so bad it's hard for me to believe that this team is only a year away.

the good thing, it's just ONE year.... learn from it, retool, replace, and get back at it next year.. it is what it is

Yeah, if your definition of "being fine" is not making the college world series.

It’s just weird how nails Ackenhausen, Guidry and Hurd were down the stretch last season, and how bad they are now.

Herring kept the momentum he had from the end of last year.

On the flip side, despite the bad pitching and untimely hitting, the team would be 6-6 in SEC play if Brasswell and the catchers could stop booting the fricking ball like a t-ball team. The at bats are getting better and will continue to improve.
