I am a big fan of John Chavis. I think he is a defensive mastermind when it comes to schemes to stop offensive minded teams. It just seems like the last couple of years our linebackers have been declining. They seem to be lacking that aggressiveness that minter, Riley, Sheppard had. They don't consistently attack. I think he has to do better in recruiting hard nose attack linebackers. Kwon seems like the only one that steps up occasionally. I hope Garrett will be that ball hawking LB we've been missing.

I just don't think Welter is very good, but he plays anyway.

You have to give some of that burden to the DL. The DL is not controlling the LOS and the LBs are getting a lot more blockers coming their way and hence less room to operate.

The defensive line + DJ Welter/Lamar Louis, are all a step down from previous years. Bash away but sometimes truth hurts.

good god its the first game folks where the entire team played like dogshite for 2.5 quarters....they are extremely young. You can't even begin to say how this Defense etc, blah blah compares to years past when have barely started the season. Give it time and these kids will gel...I like the potential of this entire team.

2013 was the worst DLine play since probably 2008, maybe even 2001. That has severely affected the LB's.

Game 1 showed the same problem.

Anyone that defends Welter's playing ability should be auto-banned. Kid may have heart, may do all the right things (aside from being suspended for grades in the past), but he is a flat out terrible Mike backer.

He does not plug holes. He shuffles his feet and looks for a blocker and engages until the play is over. We would probably be better moving Kwon inside and playing Debo on the outside. I know Kwon is small, but hell, you CAN NOT do worse. On a positive note, Welter does show up to the tackle just in time to celebrate every play. He's good at that.

This is what I see too. I keep waiting for him to make contact with a running back at the line of scrimmage and it never happens.

DJ does not have the physical tools Beckwith has, but he has the brains. DJ knows where the football is going.

What makes you think these LB's are young?

Literally all welter does is tiptoe around and lightly run into the first blocker he sees...he doesn't even try to shake the guy off

I believe it is a combo of the DL and the LBs. Just not sure we have the players in these spots that we used to have and it is not all youth. 2 SRs, 4 JRs, and one SOPH make up our front seven. Also the few guys that rotate in as backups haven't set the world on fire either. I know it is early and they can improve.

I don't know if we will face a better OL this year than Wisconsin's.

They are pretty bad. Definately need to upgrade the talent level there. D-line is just terrible, as well, which highlights the LB play. LB's can't get off blocks(except Kwon a few times), we seem to only do well with blitzing packages, and hope they guess right. Base defense will get throttled in SEC play. I'm just hoping getting some of those DT's back off suspension/whatever, will change the dynamics..

This is it in a nutshell. To me it's not lack of effort or heart. It's physical these guys are maybe not quiet as good yet. Hopefully both lines will improve, because after being at the game and seeing both of them get manhandled most of the game they have a long way to go.

well, yes you can. they've now played a game vs a big 10 opponent. This is exactly when you can begin to say things regarding the defense.

Completely agree. Rewatched the game and saw some really good signs. Having Bain back on the line should help too.

I'm almost believing this is what Welter is coached to do hes so consistent at it. He never plugs holes at the line of scrimmage and always gets engaged 3 to 4 yards off the ball.

Maybe Chief knows he cant plug a hole at the line so Chief just says "DJ try to stay right were you lined up and see if you can catch the guy when he runs by you for a three yard gain"

If welter is so smart and knows where the ball is then he should be there 1st instead of last. He is like watching a pee wee player that dog pills on top after tackle has bn made . I think last year we had 2 or 3 defenseive lineman that only cared about getting a check this year in nfl . They were more about themselves and not lsu

It's hard when you only have 2 on the field.
