I've learned something watching Les Miles and LSU for the last 9 years: With Miles, you have to approach a football game and season like a good sausage - look only at the end product, not what it looked like as it was being made.

Every year and every game, he does things that make any knowledgeable football fan cringe. But despite all his buffoonery, his teams win a lot! His record over the last 9 seasons is phenomenal. He's had unbelievable success in the only stat that matters, the W-L line. He has LSU squarely in the very upper echelon of college football.

You can't concentrate on what he does in-game -- you have to look at the end result and the games/seasons as a whole.

For example, this year they lost 11 starters to the NFL and - even though playing in the toughest division of the toughest conference and having one of the toughest schedules in the country - won 10 games (yet again) and a major bowl game.

For example, in this game, he played a tough team with a great defense and had to do it with a 19-year-old true freshman QB and missing his best defensive player. But they got the W.

So, with Miles, you just can't watch the sausage being made. You have to appreciate what it tastes like after the creation process.

It's about the anti-process. Well done.

It sucks that college football is such a beauty pageant. Winning is what really matters, but apparently that isn't good enough.

That is the one thing I like better about the NFL in that all you have to do is win. It doesn't matter if it is by 1 point or 50, as long as you get the W.

Miles is a great "sausage" I guess, but it doesn't mean that there aren't better ingredients out there (or lessons to be learned) that can be added to the recipe.

Isn't that the downside of technology? We see so much analysis, so much video, so much breakdown from the "experts," it makes it so much harder to appreciate the game itself.

I love that. Probably the best description of Les Miles' coaching style, ever.

Not in football. That's why we're so goddamn inconsistent.

Best thread title ever.

Results are all that matter. I'd also like to add if Mett had played we TORCH Iowa.

So, you're saying that Iowa had 9 guys in the box to stop the run and single coverage on the outside and Mett would have had a hard time with that?

Also, winning today's game was any less or more of a W?

just the best 9 years of my life!
somehow, I just decided to support lm the day he was hired. it's kinda like watching my kids grow up. I always loved them, even when they were learning life lessons. I'm glad I did, and I'm glad I do.

Then you're a fricking idiot. Mett wouldn't have missed receivers downfield, it would have been a bloodbath.

Which is why every year we have a game like Ole Miss or like 1-9 or like needing the biggest comeback in LSU history to beat Troy.

Yes 10 wins a year is great and he'll never fear for his job as long as that happens.

But, with him at the helm, we will never be better than the 5th team in a 4 team playoff.

At least we never lose to ULM or UAB.

Iowa had 9 guys in the box because we allowed them to have 9 guys in the box due to the 2 tight 2 back formation we love so much. Do we take advantage of the 1 on 1 coverage if Mett plays today? Who knows. I'm thinking probably not.

Sure it was a win, but certainly nothing to get excited about. Iowa doesn't have half the players we have, and in typical Les fashion, we struggle to beat an unranked team.

I believe this is directly related to the all that matters is the W philosophy that so many here believe in. We're so inconsistent it's a joke.
