Lady Tigers 70, Ole Miss 41

The Lady Tigers came out firing on all cylinders tonight, taking Ole Miss behind the woodshed by almost thirty points!
This team continues to just get better and better. Over the past two weeks it seems as if someone different steps up to start contributing, where they were not before. Recently it was Rina Hill and Jasmine Rhodes. Tonight, it was the freshman Jenna Deemer with 22 pts (3-6 3pt). Other than Deemer there was balanced scoring from the rest of the team. Danielle Ballard had a solid all around game with 11 pts, 7 steals, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. In her first game back Dashawn Harden finished with 8 pts (2-4 3pt).
Additionally, this team's defense is LIGHT YEARS better than it was at the beginning of the season. Again, I don't think we can beat USC or Tennessee. However, this team can compete, and beat, every other team in the SEC. We're thin in the post but our post players play HARD and are a lot more mobile than our post players from last year. I'm excited to see how the rest of this season plays out. Barring injuries THIS may end up being Caldwell's best coaching job since she's been here.
Here's the video highlights....

You think there are geniuses on this board?

OM's coach seemed mad at the end. Real quick handshake and they started full court pressing in the last 2 minutes down 30+. It's not like we were rubbing it in, NC called off the press with 5 minutes left.
The men and women in the same position of having to take care of business the next 3 before they play #1.

Our next three games we should be favored (Auburn, Alabama, Missouri). We should be 8-3 in the SEC when we get to Columbia.

What kind of chance do they have of making the tournament?

This was an impressive win, even though it was at home and one of the Lady Rebs' best players was greatly distracted by family factors outside the game, as the announcers indicated.
It looks like Coach Caldwell has them playing pretty well going into February, and they need to keep doing this to be sure of getting a decent seed in the NCAA tournament.

I think 6-2 to close out the regular season and a SEC tourney win would get them in easy. It's clearly a different team with Ballard and they'd be viewed more by the conference record than non-conference IMO.
Finish 5-3(without beating either USC, UGA, or A&M) or 4-4 they might a need a deep SEC tourney run.

Who was the big girl standing beside Caldwell after the game? Was that the girl from Curtis who played last year?

Hopefully Deemer gets more time going forward, I love to watch her play. The girl can flat out shoot

No…Tank Youngblood ended up transferring to E. Carolina. It could have been Alexis Hyder, who is pretty good sized. She transferred from N. Texas and is sitting out this year. She was pretty good there…averaged 13 points and 7 rebounds per game over 2 years.

He is a poor man's Frank Martin…seems to be a little ball of hate. Pretty good coach though….Ole Miss will be respectable again fairly soon.

IF they continue to play well, the schedule is set up for a big run right now.
Current record: 11-9, 5-3 SEC
The next 3 games are against the 3 worst teams in the SEC…they MUST win those games. Then they go to South Carolina, which will certainly be a loss. That would put them at 14-10 and 8-4 with 4 games left.
The final 4 games are home vs. Georgia, who just lost their best player for the rest of the season with a broke leg….then at Arkansas, who sucks, at Ole Miss, who we just beat the crap out of, then home vs. Texas A&M, who we played a close game with a few weeks ago when Ballard was just coming back.
Win 3 of those final 4 and the record would be 17-11 and 11-5. 11-5 would probably earn a first round bye at the SEC tournament. Maybe go 1-1 there, and end up at 18-12. That would get LSU in.
TL, DR version: The schedule is set up for LSU to finish 6-2 the rest of the season, which would probably get them in.

Imagine what Caldwell could do with more talent, hopefully she can get this fixed in the offseason with a new hire and some Juco recruits

Maybe she has the talent she wants to run her system? With Ballard added to the mix, this team is pretty ferocious defensively when it comes to pressing and stealing the ball. I agree that a little more of a post presence would be nice, but scheme-wise, this team is beginning to do what she wants them to do effectively.

What she really needs to find is a carbon copy of Boogie Barrett and a couple shooters.
