Kelvin Sheppard should shadow Cam Newton. Sheppard is a great tackler and if he plays Spy, he will give Cam fits all day. K.Sheppard SPY CAM!

Damn I thought that CBS might put a camera on Sheps helmet during the game. That would be awesome!

I hope no one actually thinks no one has been spying newton all year. Everyone does it. Just because you're spying him doesn't mean you're going to hit him in the backfield, or even at all. Auburn prepares for newton having a defender spying him. It's not a cure all for cam is all I'm saying.

Hope that explains it trian73

.....and there may have been a spy applied to Cam, but Auburn has not faced a defense like ours. The pressure from the front accompanied by Shep as a spy will be different from the defenses they have faced.

It's not necessarily a bad strategy but he can't be Newton's spy the entire game. Cam's game is to make plays with his feet. The second he starts scrambling he's the most dangerous player in college football. If Shep just commits immediately it will mean our best cover LB just left the middle of the field wide the frick open. Auburn's big passing plays this year are when the plays break down. Our CBs & Safeties will be busy down field. Leave the middle open all the time and see what happens.

Auburn runs a spread option. When a defense plays this type of offense, defenders have certain keys and reads, not a "spy" per say. Our guys just need to make the proper reads, get off blocks and make the tackle on first contact. Seems to me most of Newton's runs are so good because of all the arm tackling and missed tackles.

I see your point. Their TE could camp out in the middle. I know Florida was not crazy about his passing skills and thought if we just kept the pressure on him and put a spy on him to contain his running then he would make mistakes. I got your point, well done.

Exactly. The Chief's game plan for Tebow in '09 was to seal the edges and fill the middle with numbers. I look for much of the same Saturday. We have the DEs to push Newton to the middle. Just gotta make sure that second wave is in the correct position. Gap assignments and PATIENCE will be the key to limiting Newton to big plays.

Yeah, but they didn't have a guy that was a combination of Darrell Green's speed and Lawrence Taylor's linebacker instincts. LSU PLAYERS ARE THE BEST!

Players said that talk of a "spy" -- someone assigned to shadow Newton exclusively -- was a recipe for defensive disaster.

"Never," Sheppard said. "In this league, I doubt that any defensive coordinator tells a player to spy on one guy. When you do that, it opens up a lot of holes in the defense."

I posted it should be PP, not shep. PP is faster and just as physical. Our def is great but if Cam gets by the front 4, we need someone who can get to him or even catch up to him if he breaks thru which would be PP, not Shep speed wise.

This is just fricking retarded. Why would you give up locking down an entire side of the field for the whole game? Teams don't even throw past the hash that PP7 is lined up on. The key to this game is, for the last time, GAP ASSIGNMENTS & PATIENCE. We probably won't blitz/attack as much as we've been doing because that's when Newton is most dangerous. You can't let him get into the secondary.

Wrong, we play same D we will get beat by Cam. It's not like its only him against 11 LSU players. He will have blockers and he will get the yards if we don't do something special to contain him. So make him throw it to beat us, we have good enough backs to still lock down both sides without PP.
