Lots of guys are great coordinators.
Leave the proving grounds for lower tier schools
The LSUs and UGAs of the world are nuts if they let their school be the place a guy tries his hands at gaining first HC success.

Okay?
Also, LSU isn't Georgia.
Miles was a very average coach and even he maintained and already established LSU team.
I'm not sure who you are referring to here.
I really believe LSU would do well with an offensive genius HC because they can always attract great DC's IMO with this talent.
Herman and Jimbo are still my #1 and #2. If Coach O wins out then he probably earned it.
But again, LSU is not Georgia. Are they still starting a true freshman QB?

Can you be proven until you get a shot to prove?
I agree with the premise you need HC experience. But it doesnt mean it always has to be successful experience. We learn from failure also.
Don't remember Saban's record prior to LSU. But I am sure he learned from losing.

Has there been a single name attached to our job with no HC experience?

What coordinators are even in consideration anyway? Kiffen isn't coming here

I remember he was doing GREAT at Michigan State, and he was considered one of the up and coming coaches by those in the know.
Wikipedia
1995–1997?—?Beginning in 1995, Saban moderately improved MSU's fortunes, taking the Spartans to minor bowl games (all of which they lost by double-digit margins) in each of his first three seasons. From 1995 to 1997, Michigan State finished 6–5–1, 6–6, and 7–5. In comparison, MSU had finished 5–6, 6–6 and 5–6 (prior to NCAA forfeits) in 1992–1994.
1998?—?On November 7, 1998, the Spartans upset the No. 1 ranked Ohio State 28–24 at Ohio Stadium. However, even after the upset and an early-season rout of then-highly ranked Notre Dame the Spartans finished 6–6, including three last-minute losses featuring turnovers, defensive lapses, and special-teams misplays, and failed to earn a bowl invitation.
1999?—?Saban led the Spartans to a 9–2 season that included wins over Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State. However, the two losses were routs at the hands of Purdue and Wisconsin. Following the final regular-season game against Penn State, Saban abruptly resigned to accept the head coaching position with LSU. Saban's assistant head coach and successor, Bobby Williams, then coached MSU to a Citrus Bowl victory over Florida, giving the Spartans an overall record of 10–2 for the 1999 season. It would be the best season in terms of wins for the Spartans since 1965, and it would see the Spartans reach their highest ranking since the 1966 team.[21] Future NFL head coach Josh McDaniels served as a graduate assistant on Saban's 1999 coaching staff.

pretty sure you can judge that after 6 games

I could be a good DC under Saban. Most people knew that it would be hard to gauge Smart's success.

Still early in Smart's tenure. Time will tell how he does.
But, yes, I agree with the OP. And I said the same exact thing when Smart was hired. Lots of fans were excited because he was a UGA alum, and a Saban protege.
I told people I was skeptical since he's never been a HC before.
Most people wrote me off by saying things like "Saban's head coaching career had to start somewhere."
My response: "Uh, yeah, well Saban's first HC job was at Toledo."

His last season at MSU, they went 10-2
He was considered one of the bright up and comers and Emmert knew LSU HAD to get him

That's really funny. Coach O lovers point to 8 games as a full career of proven success. And he only won 6 of the 8.
LSU didn't fire Miles to hire a DL coach.

It's his first year at Georgia. You can't tell much right now. By year three one can make judgements on his head coach abilities.

Didn't Saban lose to Vandy before?

Yeah, but Saban is the DC....come on. He basically is. Smart and Muschamp are only proving that Saban is a legend and ,without him, they are worthless.
