Kevin Steele hire revisted by beauchristopher
Well Mills injury didn't help.

Thomas has been bad

While it certainly appears so, watching the replay it's obvious on at least one occasion he was expecting help over the top. Not sure if the safety blew it or what

lulz
Both mississippi state and awwwbaaarrrnn have since been dropped from the rankings. But whatever helps you think this is a dominant defense broski.

This defense can be dominant , but the selective effort concerns me. Hope to see a full 4 quarters from them Saturday.

Thanks BeBe

I think Chavis would have them playing better as a group. The defense hasn't impressed me yet...especially based on the teams we have played. Too many busted coverages in the secondary. Some of the guys I thought would excel have been a disappointment.

Yeah, lets wait until we face another 1st team QB before we start raving about defence. Miss St had us on the ropes in the second half. Since then we have faced mostly third team/walk on type QBs.

Not convinced yet. WAY too many second half points.

The thing that will potentially cost us a game is special teams. They have been consistently inconsistent in all games so far. This is a big issue.

He has:

-future NFL draft picks littered all over the defensive roster
-an offense with a once in a generation RB and great Oline
- A HC with a ball control mentality
- faced 1.5 starting QBs in 5 games
(Johnson was replaced by white)

How about he holds someone, anyone, to less points than his predecessors 5 yr avg here? I mean if a genie gave me 3 wishes as a DC all three would be one of the above....

I mean I'm really trying to be positive here, but Jesus...
We are running for 300+ yards a game and you are giving up mid 20's to Syracuse, E Michigan, and SC' backup QB's BACKUP! I'm talking 3rd and 4th string here in some of these games

D line hasn't done much. Lacouture is so overrated Gilmore should start.

12th best rushing defense in the country

39th best pass defense in the country

If secondary is as good as they are, then d-line is a little better. So according to your logic, one of the best DB cores in the country is ACTUALLY overrated. GTFO troll

We haven't played anyone worth a shite yet, of course our defensive stats are inflated. Yet we still are giving up 20 plus pts a game against cupcakes, you don't know what you're talking about moron.

In the 1st half our D is top 5 in the nation

But it always seems in the 2nd half we give up at least 1 really good drive and a TD due to fatigue. God forbid if anything happens to Beckwith our LB's are a serious problem

Positives: recruiting, edge rushing, exotic pressures and NO 3rd and Chavis. Concerns: loss of focus especially late in the game.

I think the defensive line is thin enough to tire late in the game to the point that their pass rush suffers and give opposing quarterbacks more time to find receivers open. Even with TOP tilted in our favor that will happen with a pass heavy team. The run defense if totally satisfactory. That said I am satisfied with the defense

We really don't know how good he is yet. Curious to see how this weekend shakes down and especially excited to watch the Bama match up.

I am reserving judgement until we get Mills back. The secondary has not been good this season. We will need our offense to really click as we enter the home stretch because I don't see our defense flat out winning games for us against the teams we have to play.

yeah.. this could definitely be a problem. It was pretty evident against State in the second half.
Texas A&M and Bama could exploit this.

Otherwise we seemingly have a break but don't bend mentality. First and Second in the SEC in Passing and Rushing yards allowed (respectively).
But like 9th in Points allowed? That's kind of strange.

Generating turnovers and Redzone defense need to improve. If they are, the "thinness" at DL shouldn't be as big of a weakness.

Right now.. I'm still of the opinion that Chavis was still a good bit better. O was a GREAT hire. Him and the talent are masking Steele's weaknesses thus far.

Defensive line has done pretty good and we've been getting a lot more sacks and hurries. We are weak against the pass, especially short ones. When we play a quality QB, he is going to make our defense look like swiss cheese.

Let's face it...Miles wanted O and Corey to stay and only so many guys are DC quality, that would also keep all assistants and coach LBs. If you think about it, the hire makes perfect sense in that respect.

You can argue on the move otherwise, but most big name DCs would want their guys. Plus Steele could recruit and knows the SEC and Bama.

This is the correct answer and a very good post. And, it was discussed a the time. One of the major fears was that Miles would just hire a LB coach. That's pretty much what he did.

Having said that, the results have been pretty good, and it's reasonable to think that the best days of this defense are in front of it. We'll know before the end of the year if this was a good move. It's just too soon to say, IMO.

A lot of these 2nd half pts are given up during garbage time. I don't understand what most people don't understand about that. Auburn wouldn't have touched the 20's if all of our back ups wouldn't have been in by mid 3rd quarter. Syracuse game was well in hand and they scored a late td to make it some what close. EMU was never in doubt. Miss st was held under 20 when the starters stayed in for the entire game.

With all that being said, this weekend will be the first true test to see what we really have.

I watched the vaunted Chavis D last year against Auburn and Ms St and ND. Please don't tell me we've stepped down. We'll be fine.
