He almost cost us the game for not throwing to the second base for DP. Hope he'll learn from it.

Meanwhile, Pap was the hero in both game 2 and 3. Great catcher LSU had in this decade.

Hope you don't mean greatest this decade, I can think of two that were better all-around catchers.

Pap's bat has really started to come alive the last few weekends. Average still looks a little rough, but he's making his ABs count more now.

4 for 11 with 2 walks this weekend
3 for 9 with 5 walks last weekend

Nothing earth shattering but solid for a bottom of the order guy hitting around the Mendoza line previously

Pap had to make up for failing to put down the tag Friday night. That one play possibly cost us the game. He learned from it and did much better Saturday and Sunday. His plate appearances have definitely improved lately.

Smith made a freshman mistake. He will learn from it too.

I sit near third base looking directly down the line to second base. From my view, Smith had no options. The runner going between second and third was directly between Smith and Freeman on second, blocking the throw. Better not to risk trying to throw through a runner or wide of the base, pulling Freeman off the base and potentially going into outfield.

The SC batter was their centerfielder, who runs about as good as Zach Watson. By the time Smith fielded the ball and checked the runner on second, it was too late to make a throw to first. The runner rounded third, so at that point he attempted to tag him, but it was much too late.

Think you got 2 different plays happening there....
But you are correct about Josh, the runner was in his initial throwing line, could see it on TV as he double clutched, & once he did that the DP was not going to happen.
The other play you mentioned was when KRob ended up trying to catch the guy @ 3rd when he had no throw to 1st...

You're correct. Kramer was deep in the hole. Ball was not hit that hard and he had no play anywhere.

Either way, fans around us at the Box went into full meltdown but Smith really had few options. His only shot would have been an immediate throw to 1st base, which have led to a fan meltdown with no throw to second for a double play.

I disagree, and I think he would agree with me. I am not trying to bash the kid, but he made a mistake. He should have kept his momentum going forward onto the grass, creating a throwing lane around the runner, and attempted the double play. It is what it, it was a mistake, and hopefully he learns from it. Ultimately it is the best kind of mistake, one that didn't cost you a game. As long as he learned from it we can all move on.

I believe Smith didn't throw to second because the SC base runner purposely stopped to get between Smith and the bag with no clear target to throw. As soon as Smith hesitated it was too late. Bush league but smart if that was the case.
