Smooth is the right word. When he runs his head doesn’t bounce at all. It’s like he’s on wheels.

Tarkenton was a scrambler - but never showed a lot of interest in running for positive yards. He scrambled to extend plays and throw the ball downfield. The exception was near the goal line.

According to his stats, he only averaged about 200 yards rushing per season over his career. Granted, he may not have been a full-time starter all those years - so that stat may be skewed.

But my memories of him as a scrambler were to set up a big pass play.

JD5 might not have the fastest 40 but I bet his top speed is best on the team. It's like 4 yard strides just gliding, no one is catching him from behind.

I’ve been hoping he’d break one off in a game from his own 20 and just really see his speed on a straight shot down the field. The juking and dodging I think masks how fast he really is.

Reminds me a Vince young. They never look like they are going that fast, yet they always run passed the first defender.

They both are also very active with their hands when running. Pump fakes, calling out blocks etc. That's actually pretty hard to do when you're flying.
