Jayln Patterson's Three Point Regression

LSU is currently 10th in the conference in 3PM and 10th in 3 point percentage at 33%. Three point shooting is one of LSU's biggest needed areas of improvement to become a tournament level team (which isn't a laughable now as it seemed to be at the begging of the year, btw). Some players have shown glimpses of promise in their three point shooting improvement, such as Brandon Sampson. Unfortunately some have not...
The primary culprit here is Jayln Patterson. What could have possibly led to his three point shooting regression? Is it how and where he is getting the ball now as compared to his freshman year? Will it potentially improve with him playing off ball more when Branden Jenkins is ready to go?

It's very early. Sample size is too small to make that call.

Our 3 point shooting woes ultimately come down to one factor and that is shot selection.
Patterson will never be an elite shooter but his shot selection has been very poor. Blakeney can make rhythm three's with ease but he has taken some very poor shots. Sampson does the same.
It really is that simple. Our post players have taken better three point attempts and are both hitting at over 50%.

We shot 32.7% last year, 33.9% in 2014-15, 34.2% in 2013-14 and 35.6% in 2012-13. We've just never been even an above average 3 point shooting team under CJJ. He doesnt really consistently coach against bad shots. Might do a thing here or there but all in all wants his guys to fire the basketball which usually wont lead to great 3 point shooting teams.

Let's hold off on this until we play a school with a pulse

Was the sample size too small last year as well??

We've played plenty of schools with a pulse...

Patterson playing PG kills him. Look at the regression of PGs under Johnny. He asks so much of them, they rarely get their own shots.

Patterson is a shooter, and he will continue to shoot. As long as we have guards who penetrate the paint as well as we do (sometimes Patterson is one of them), I think we need him to keep shooting the open shots. He and the Aussie will continue to see open 3 pt shots.

Ehh, I'll say Houston, VCU, and Wichita State were. But we kinda sucked against 2 of those 3

and lost to them.

We have definitely played some teams with a pulse. We don't have the hardest schedule, but we have played some quality teams. Just because they don't have a big name university across their chest doesn't mean they aren't a quality opponent.
Wichita St
Old Dominion
VCU
Houston
NC Central
Charleston
All the above teams are quality opponents. Now, are these really tough teams? No, but they aren't just cupcake rent-a-wins.

This team isn't making the tournament unless you're talking about the NIT

But do we really need to hold off from saying that it isn't a laughable statement? It's not like I said we would be making it to the sweet 16 or anything...

Hopefully Jenkins can get healthy & sub for Mays.
Patterson can then play minutes at SG.

Jalyn's jump shot looks awfully awkward. He gets no elevation and seems to be all arms.

I think the NIT is more likely, but the tournament isn't out of the question. Have you watched any SEC basketball this year? The league as a whole is down. It really depends how many teams from the SEC make the tourney. We could finish in the top 4-5. Usually the top 4-5 teams in the SEC make the tourney.

Yeah that's fair, I'm still holding out hope we do make it.
I was just saying that with our schedule being this weak I didn't expect much more than 2 loses at this point to begin with.

I wouldnt even be mad at the NIT. I just hope it would get JJ the door.
