Is there any practical reason for us using such an odd kickoff formation?

Kickoffs I think. Punts are not odd.

I have been wondering if there is a trick play that can be called from that formation and if that isn't the reason that we have been running it to set up that play when we need it.

It's for purposes of "trickeration".

it started at w.va.
w.va had been playing man to man blocking on kick offs. it was planning on focusing on honey badger and mo. it didn't work.

s.t. uses the new formation to confuse the blocking assignments of the recv. team.

Hides TM, Reid, Blue, and Loston, and soon Loston and Mingo. Pretty soon, too many to key on.

Set up for an on side kick. They will not expect it when it comes.

Remember a few short years ago when everyone bitched about the punt ugly formation? The Rantards be-otched about the 3 blockers lined up about 8 yds behind the LOS. Now just about every school does it.

The straight up the middle onside kick could come from that formation on any given kickoff. But yes, the main purpose is to confuse blocking schemes.

I've been wondering this too. Good to see some well thought out answers.

Is there any reason you have to make multiple threads to ask dumb questions, or can you just put all of them in one?

I thought it might have something to do with the onside kicks. The opposing team would not know which side the kick was going to
