Is there a cap on how much money a program can spend on coaches?

There is all this debate on if LSU should ante up to keep Raymond. The way I see it is that LSU athletics has tons of money. Raymond is a proven coach and I'd rather that than anyone else (better devil you know than the devil you don't sort of thing). LSU athletics I'm sure has the bank account to double his salary so why wouldn't they to have the best coaching staff possible unless there is some limit.

No cap but there is a thing called a budget and being realistic

LSU ran into a public perception cap a few years ago, that's about it though

No, but they don’t want to be stupid about it.

If that program is producing championships, there is hardly a limit on the checkbook. Only when that program is unsuccessful will they cap it.

Do you know how it works?

If you want a chance to compete for championships you have to be willing to pay what the market demands.
I don't think there's such a thing as spending too much. If you have the guy you want and he's within your means then that's all that matters. That's why I never got the A&M ridicule. Sure for Missori's budget $75m is ridiculous but for A&M that's a drop in the bucket and they got their guy.
It's not spending enough that will ensure mediocrity.
