He is a freshman punter than came in highly touted but was beat out in the fall. Seems to make sense to redshirt?

Didn't he destroy his ankle last year?

He'll be a big weapon for our new head coach. Avery is not very good at punting

As long as he doesn't play in more than 4 games there is no reason not to redshirt him.

The talk has been that his leg is everything as advertised as far as strength; but McMahon likes them to be able to directionally kick as well as pin kicks inside the 20, which is what Todd has struggled with some as a freshman.

On the other hand, LSU hasn't really needed him. Avery is having a good season thus far and really hasn't had any WTF moments on his kicks. He's averaging just over 40 yards per punt, which is 3 yards less than VonRosenburg, has had only 2 touchbacks in 26 attempts while pinning the ball 13 times inside the 20, and has 3 kicks that have been +50 yds with a long of 55. For his first year as a punter, that is really good.

He had an injury but I don’t think it had an outcome on him not winning the job. Redshirt him and hopefully we have a punter locked in for the next 4 years

Not to take shots at Avery, he is doing his best, but I disagree. LSU is 89th in the country in Net Yards, which I would think is the most important punting stat.

Is net yards just punt yardage minus return yardage? Obviously important. However, it wouldn’t really take into account short punts that are placed really well. For example, your on the opponents 45 and punt to their 10. Only a 35 yard punt but is exactly what you want.

It factors in touchbacks, hangtime/returnability, etc.

If Todd can boom it I’d rather just use 2 punters. And use Avery for Short punts.

We would still have 4 seasons to find a punter for what would have been Todd’s RS Sr year

You are correct. He actually punted in a couple of games at the end of the season at WM following his surgery. He just didn’t play LB anymore and then of course enrolled early at LSU.

I’ve heard(don’t know if it’s true)that he was out kicking his coverage really bad and they were trying to dial him in a little. If he kicking the shite out of it like that, we should be in good shape once he gets squared away.

Are you fricking kidding me? Hang time has nothing to do with net punting yards

Are you kidding me? Higher hang time allows your coverage team to get down field, resulting in lower return yardage. Do you not know how punts and punt returns work? If your punter is kicking a 45-yard line drive, you are much more likely to give up return yardage than a 45-yarder with longer hang time.
