The top 5 players in the state of Louisiana (according to Perfect Game's ranking) all signed with LSU and all made it to campus. There are 15 years of PG rankings available - never have all of the top 5 in state players signed with LSU, and never have all of the top 5 made it to campus. Not sure what the circumstances were that led to this, but I see it as a positive.

Who were they? I assume Smith and Slaughter were two

Watson
Slaughter
Templet
Smith
Reese

ETA: I think this is a confluence of effective scouting/recruiting by the staff and the fact that even the best pro prospect in the state (Slaughter, Smith) still had enough questions around him to drop him in the draft (competition mainly for Slaughter, size and signability for Smith).

I'll have this in my piece but in Mainieri's 11 years at this school he's had 3 freshman play in collegiate summer leagues entering their freshman fall. One of them was Kevin Gausman...the other two will be on the roster next year in Slaughter and Smith respectively.

Smith and Slaughter are expected to start at the infield corners this season, both were all stars in the collegiate summer leagues in which they played this past summer as incoming freshmen.

Templet has loud power. Watson will transition from infield to outfield for college but can absolutely fly. Reese's fastball has gotten as high as 93-94 I believe.

Agreed, he's pushing for the fastest 60 time on the team and if Breaux doesn't start then both he and Watson will have major roles as pinch runners in late game situations.

Kind of, it also means ground balls, line drives, everything. He makes hard contact when he makes contact. That typically translates into a higher BABIP in lower levels of baseball (low minors, college, etc).

Considering how many Seniors are on the squad, as well as the juniors that will be drafted very high, it looks like this class comes at the perfect time.

Been watching Smith play since he was a kid in Central and he has always been better than everyone else so I would expect nothing less from him at the collegiate level..

I'm not the person you want to talk to then. I can only keep finding reasons to like this team more and more.
