or USL make it, much less schools like Northwestern or SLU. Zero FB income. How can the athletic Dept in these schools survive. The P5 and ND of course wont have a problem but could you see a collapse of 50 to 75% of schools (at all levels) currently playing FB if there are NO games played?

Well they are also colleges, so I assume you mean athletic programs? And they’ll make it, government money probably. Rich former players, boosters, etc.

I mean it’s a worthwhile question. UAB’s program is basically just back from the dead as it is for example.

Lower P5 schools are in more danger then schools like ULL or La Tech. Bottom feeding P5 schools that depend on the outrageous P5 tv contracts to support their athletic programs like Iowa St., Rutgers, etc. are the schools that would feel the most damage. TV contracts for Sunbelt, CUSA and MAC schools are worth around 400,000 a year. Tech could survive a couple years without football but hopefully it'll never get to that point. Now some FCS programs might have to shut down if football is not played.

The G5 lives in reality while the P5 lives in fantasy land, and when these ridiculous contracts go away they will fall back to earth and live like the rest of the collegiate sports world. It's coming.

Based on your title, I am sure other schools will still like LA Tech

Afraid college athletes is about to be purged of the low budget programs. There will be a lot of kids that never get to experience a college career. I used to do a few recruiting seminars in the DFW area & one of the messages was that if you sincerely have the desire to play college ball, there is a place for you to play. May not be at TU, A&M or LSU, but there is a place to play. That may not hold up much longer.

It's going to crush them. They simply don't have the cash flow or free capital to sit this season out. Programs like southern and trembling are going to be hurting even worse. It's sad but true.

Tech will be fine. It's more of a reality that at least one of these schools ends up cutting football and/or other sports (NSU, SELU, Nichols, LC, ULM, and McNeese).

I really wouldnt be surprised if LSU even started cutting some of the rando sports. Stanford did it already

the answer to your question can be found the the financial reports of a public university. i'm not going to do the work but i strongly suspect that schools like Tech LOSE money on athletics; yes, including football.

it should be easy for the college financial dept. to come up with a calculation on the financial impact of no sports for a year. if, in fact, they do lose money (and require state aid) then suspending sports for a year should not impact the ir bottom line negatively and may actually help it.

now, there is still a cost. all of the employees losing their jobs for a year and the local business revenue lost on game day, etc. and facility maintenance would have to continue.

athletic schollies may have to be suspended also; partially or completely.

i know these measures sound terrible (and they are) but should be considered so as not to endanger the real purpose of the university; that is, EDUCATION.

This story is mostly about ULL athletic finances but it talks about all state schools later in the article.

It may be surprising for some to see how much money comes from the Universities to fund athletics. This is not unique to Louisiana.

I'm not sure how they can take more money from academics to subsidize sports if there is no football.

quote:

It's common for universities to partially subsidize their athletic programs or for them to lose money. As of 2018, only 29 of the country's 130 Division 1 programs were profitable without needing help from their universities' budgets, according to the NCAA.

In fiscal year 2019, UL Athletics received more than 55% of its total revenue from the university, the highest rate of any Division I program in Louisiana — with the exception of Tulane, which does not submit its reports to the legislative auditor.

The University of New Orleans receives 54% of its revenue from the university, and Southern University gets more than 51%. The University of Louisiana at Monroe gets about half its money from the university, while Northwestern State University receives about 49%, and both Grambling State University and McNeese State University both get about 47%. Louisiana Tech gets 44%, Southeastern University gets 42%, and Nicholls State University gets about 29.5%, according to the audit reports.

Honestly this argument goes even deeper than football. Louisiana has just about as many public universities as Florida with a fifth of the population. I think we really do need to restructure this based off academics. If you not reach a certain standard of academics and graduation rate, you get put on probation and if you dont get your stuff together, you merge with another school.

ULM and Tech used to be neck and neck and now Tech has basically sucked ULM dry. They really should give Tech their pharmacy school and close. UNO was barely hanging on before COVID
