The No "S" in LSU article has gone viral. Almost nearly everybody on Facebook has seen it.

Do you believe the President of the University?

No, I do not. The university pulled the same card in 2010 to try and prevent cuts. The cuts were suppose to be devasting and would have caused my degree program to be cut. The cuts came and guess what happened? The university made a few moves to be more efficient and then they raised tuition and fees and their overall budget actually grew. Did you know the university could offer some classes online and save 50% of the operating cost vs in classroom? That would also allow the school to bring in more students.

I don't recall the president of LSU saying the university would shut down before. During the previous budget cuts things were retooled, departments eliminated, and services cut with raising tuition. Now there is not much left to do or cut. Sure a few wrinkles here and there but overall, no.

That was with the Louisiana govt using rainy day funds to help stop the bleeding. Now there's not much to use to stop the bleeding so university presidents have to prepare for the worst.

It's time to stop ignoring the problem of fiscal irresponsibility by the governor and make some changes.

I think the president went a little overboard in his statement but its to prepare for next years budget deficit which may be even a larger cut.

Keep in mind most universities are growing and LSU has been cutting back.

i guess he realized he's got to ramp up the rhetoric. 85% of the budget doesn't even come from the state.....but lets blame everything on one man.

About 13% of the budget is from state funds...$120 million out of $949 million.

And yes the budget cuts impact athletics. LSU already gives 7M to academics now may be asked to contribute more according to Nola.com.

No, they are ramping up the fear mongering since everyone was ignoring them. Alexander and his allies knew that if he even mentioned that there would be no LSU football ppl would rally behind him. It appears to be working facebook is blowing up.

In 2010, they pulled the same threat about losing accrediation. It didn't happen then and it won't happen now.

If they raised fees to cover the cost of the cuts then that would be abou ~$3,000/student *4.5 years = $13,500. If you then add that to the average student loan debt at LSU of $14,000 , you get $27,500. That is on par with with the debt from other state schools in other states and the university would be insulated from the affects of future cuts.

Tell the truth.

Is your livelihood tied to the funding at LSU?

Your argument about changing courses taught in a classroom to online classes is about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Why doesn't LSU just become something like University of Phoenix? While I think online courses are good in some situations (full-time job, family, etc.) it shouldn't become the norm at what is supposed to be a state's flagship university. All that will do is dramatically lower the quality of education at LSU, and if you are a proponent of your state's flagship university lowering standards, you're a moron.

Was the statement by the LSU president a little over the top? Yes. Are the budget cuts a real issue that every student, alumni, and resident of Louisiana should be concerned about? Yes.
