If every Rice grad attended football games, they still wouldn't fill up their stadium

Why did they build such a large stadium?

70k is enormous for a school of that size and that level of football

Maybe they had some bodies to hide, and concrete columns are good at doing that.

Rice back in the 50s and 60s was a pretty decent football power who could fill that stadium...

a lot like old Tulane Stadium and a couple of places in the Ivy League

To host a Superbowl, of course.

even in the early 70s it was one of the better road trips.
Houston was the largest LSU Alumni Group outside the state and they had lots of activities.

I went to a first round high school football game there back in ‘88 and there were 44,000 fans there.

Yates vs Willowridge

That same night that was a game at Cowboy Stadium was Dallas-MacArthur high school and there were 55,000 people there.

If I’m not mistaken, that was the same year that Friday night lights was written about.

Yeah, it was always one of the more likely road games Tiger fans would attend when they played there.

I'd imagine a lot of its size also had to do with Rice being in the old Southwest Conference, and the fact that there were so many alumni of the other big Texas schools in Houston who would likely outnumber Rice fans when they played.

Lots of nice men's dress shoes in that pic. Nice leather soles and uppers. Real class and the kind of shoes that you'd need to have hand-made today if you wanted a pair.

That's out of my reach so I just wear my Crocs everywhere.

Real class

I've met a lot of pretty trashy but very well dressed people. By the same token I've plenty of casually dressed people who are pure class.

I've also met plenty of folks who perfectly convey their essence via the manner in which they present themselves.

Point is, one can't always judge a book by its cover, so to speak.

They need to do like Stanford did and contract the seats and reduce capacity
No need for upper decks anymore there

There was no NFL team in Houston at that time. When it was built, it was second in Texas only to the Cotton Bowl, and was the second largest Southwest Conference stadium.

Of the 230,000 living LSU alums worldwide, how many do you think could return for all home games every year? You think there would be 102,000?
