I think we will get much better at the DT position.

The first half of the season we were incredibly thin at the DT position for various reasons:

Bain, Herron, and Gilmore seem to be taking a little longer than expected to get up to SEC level of play.

Lealaimatafao a self inflicted injury.

Quentin Thomas with limited play due to bicep injury.

Valentine unable to get academically cleare by the SEC (still by this situation).

Below are the number of games this season played by each DT:

Davon Godchaux 7
Christian LaCouture 7
Maquedius Bain 6
Quentin Thomas 5
Frank Herron 3
Mickey Johnson 2
Greg Gilmore 2
Trey Lealaimatafao 0
Travonte Valentine 0

IMO the DT position is looking positive for the second half of the season. If we can get Thomas healthy we will have a solid rotation of Godchaux, LaCouture, Bain, and Thomas with the other guys providing needed depth especially if we can get Lealaimatafao and Gilmore up to speed.

I'm feeling positive about the position for two main reasons, the position is getting healthier and the younger guys are gaining much needed game time experience.

IMO, if we can shore up the middle of the defensive line the entire complexion of the defense will change in the second half of the season, in a good way. Things at the DT position are moving in the right direction.

I completely agree with you, GumboPot.

Regardless of their decent performance against Florida's candy arse. Our DT's (as a whole) are very young and will only get better. I believe (and hope like hell) that the 1st half of this season is the worst DT play that we will see for some time.

Godcheaux is our best DT right now.

Good post and perspective. Simple Growing pains. You only hope by year end, Freshman no longer play like Freshman.

Maybe, but he looks aweful on passing downs. He will improve though, hopefully we can keep LaCouture until his senior year. Those dudes will be a force.

What's so funny? You don't see the DT position getting better?

I agree. Next year we will return a lot of good experience. Look for the interior of the defense to be a strength in the next 2 years.

you do realize that Godcheaux has played in all 7 games and is the only DT to do so, right?

I think he has "stepped up" as a true freshman

I don't get this line of thinking. There are plenty who never really get better so I don't understand why we are just automatically assuming all these guys will progress.

It seems we are always good "for the future" that never gets here, or very seldomly does.

Next year the DT and D-Line in general will be nasty. I do not fault Les, Chief, and Brick totally for what has happened, a lot that has been out of their control, injuries, guys leaving early (I know some will argue we have created a culture of next man up football and guys feel like they should leave early, but still those coaches want every guy back that leaves early.)

As others said when all of our problems started to arise on the D-Line game 1, we are so young, that only experience and maturity will bring the potential and athleticism out of this young group.

As others have also said still would like to see more guys rotating in, just for the simple fact would like to see more depth, but its hard for a coaching staff to do that when you do not know who is lining up every week, and we do not see practice.

Lacouture should not be playing, much less starting and getting majority of the snaps.

He had one huge miss tackle against Fla where he was waiting for him and missed. The guy bounced it outside for a huge gain

Oh it gets here all right; you're just not wise enough to recognize it. Most college football fans would be happy with LSU's season. To be 5-2 with a chance to go 9-3 or 8-4 would be a dream season for most. But you're used to better, so you're unhappy with this. It's the happiness dilemma - no matter what you get used to it's never enough. Only improvement makes you happy.

Bain is not a beast. We don't have beasts at DT. That's the problem.
