I think some of you are a little misguided about the compliance dept

I keep seeing things directed towards compliance and it seems like many of you think the dept is acting in an NCAA owned watchdog role. The LSU compliance dept is not out to get lsu. They know the NCAA rules and their job is to make sure lsu doesn’t unintentionally break those rules.

Athletes and coaches may not always be aware of every little rule in the rule books. If someone accidentally breaks a rule, however minor, the compliance department says “he y’all, you weren’t supposed to do this, it’s no biggie, but we just want to make sure you are aware,” and they self report those things to the ncaa.

Most times, nothing comes of it. If the ncaa found out on their own, then their would likely be some sort of punishment. The anger towards the dept is pretty misguided.

You would think so, but you would also be incorrect. That’s what a compliance department is supposed to do. That’s not what this compliance department is doing. 2 different things.

Compliance is a shiteshow, Woodward needs to clean house.

It's been well documented they work against coaches and NOT with coaches.

They are like the HOA flunkies in my neighbor hood sending letters when a car parks on my curb. The need to be reigned in. If every coach is complaining there is a problem. Oh and do college student's get suspended for smoking weed? The are over testing our players big time you don't see that at fricking gumpville mate.

Just shut up and get back to packing up your desk, Bahnsen.

If you and Vermillion would provide any facts to support your "arguments", it would be helpful to those of us who are trying to understand what changes are needed at LSU. There is a lot of crap being published on this board by the torch and pitchfork crew that gets in the way of understanding and correcting our real problems.

Is there is any truth to the softball picture day story then there are real issues in the dept.

Pretty sure thread was whacked & I have only seen it referenced once since, only reason I question its validity

Some of the hate is misguided, but I think the biggest complaints come in when they step outside of their jobs to be more draconian than necessary. You should never be hunting for potential violations.

I think it's been made pretty clear here, and if you read up on the last few years they self report shite that no other school does. Like a recruit crashing at a assistant coaches pad for a night.

I don’t share your sentiment at all, but I have been wondering whether an authoritarian compliance department that is well known for busting even minor things could only help the institution if Wade did do something major. I mean, no one could credibly argue we lack institutional control with they way they micromanage.

Still don’t think the current group is right, though.

Just think for a minute here, we have policies in place that put us at a competitive disadvantage to some of our main competition.

That should never happen.

The following statement makes an assumption that seems to be inaccurate based on things that have been reported.

quote:

If someone accidentally breaks a rule, however minor, the compliance department says “he y’all, you weren’t supposed to do this, it’s no biggie, but we just want to make sure you are aware,” and they self report those things to the ncaa.

The assumption is that the compliance department takes a non-adversarial attitude toward the individual coaches and their teams. The reality seems to be much more adversarial. More of a gotcha attitude as opposed to a let's try to avoid these things sort of attitude.

I think that stemmed from an idea that they were effectively the hall monitor for the AD rather than the compliance coaches for the individual coaches and athletes. That is what Woodward needs to change.

Otherwise, much of what you say is correct. It seems most fans want a compliance department that looks the other way but that is a bad idea IMO and how the whole Baylor scandal got out of hand.

We need a compliance department that proactively helps teams be in compliance. Not one looking to catch them doing something wrong and not one willing to look the other way either.

LSU athletics is a business. You don't see Amazon, Facebook, etc intentionally putting themselves at a disadvantage time after time.

Then they (or you, as applicable) should stop acting like strict parents and start acting like cooperative partners with the teams they are ostensibly supposed to be supporting.

Fully HALF of our football problems going back almost 20 years are self-inflicted wounds. I want a clean football team, but I don't want a risk averse compliance department when the competitive difference between a 10 win team and a playoff team is razor thin.

quote:

Athletes and coaches may not always be aware of every little rule in the rule books. If only it was so straightforward. The LSU compliance (by all credible reports) goes above and beyond to threaten and coerce the teams and are punitive when they are not heeded.

frick all that. Get on the team for the big win or you're part of the problem.
