I see some positives with the new defense.

I know this isn’t a popular opinion on here, however, I’m not all that upset with the defense.

1) we lead the sec in turnovers
2) we lead the sec in sacks.

This is a big deal going forward. I believe the issue with the D is personnel more than scheme. We don’t have quality lbs and safety has been been avg at best. With that said, when those groups improve, (help is on the way) this defense can be nasty. Not this year but probably next.

I’m a believer players make coaches more than coaches make players. I think Tom Brady and Bill B are perfect examples. Had we just lost queen or Phillips and not both, along with Vincent, shelvin, etc. the defense would be fine.

Once these deficiencies are corrected, we are going to have a d that puts pressure on the qb, creates turnovers and helps separate the score. It’s going to take some patience. We just lost to much/unprecedented number of players.

I know it’s not popular, however, playing the long game is going to get us where we want to be. You can see some of the advantages it presents now, we are just going through some growing pains to get there.

I love assholes that complain about saying next year will be good.

Did you think we were going to come off of the greatest season ever- return 3 starters and not skip a beat? We had more players drafted than anyone ever. We set the record for first rounders and we have new faces everywhere. Also we had 2 first round level players opt out before the season and lost another 2 starters to transfer and opt out.

Now our QB is hurt, playing a true freshman but a good season isn’t good enough for you huh?

It’s amazing to me the dumbass fans that think we’re going to win the national title every single year.

Whether you like it or not this is a rebuilding year, next year we look loaded.

Its amazing to me that other teams consistently have guys 10 yards open against “double coverage” too.

Leading in turnovers and sacks just mean we have stud players on defense and we do. So why do we have the worse defense ever and losses to Miss state and Missou?

As I stated, deficiencies at two personnel groups.

I agree. Winning the title every year is a bit overstated. Competing for the playoffs and not allowing a QB to throw for over 600 yards and losing to Missouri is certainly not what a team the caliber of LSU should be doing in any season.

Having a few playmakers is not the same thing has having a good scheme. The defense has been terrible while a few guys make plays.

I am

But I do agree we will improve. I think what we are seeing is just how good our lb's have been over the years compared to what we have now.

Fans aren't disappointed because we're not winning a national title.

They're disappointed because we're losing to sub .500 teams and giving up 600 yards in the process.

Going 4-6 with this schedule isn't "rebuilding", whether you want to admit it or not.

It's not "scheme" per se. It's the implementation of the scheme and the implementation of the fundamentals within it.

If you rewatch the SC game, on SC's first TD, the RB runs off tackle for a long TD run.

The DE gets caught on the inside. The LB gets caught on the inside. Jacoby Stevens, 20 YARDS OFF THE LINE, has his eyes completely on the routes, doesn't even diagnose run until so late that the RB runs by him untouched.

You hear the commentators talk about "eyes". That's the nice way of saying the players aren't taught right. They are missing the most basic fundamentals.

It's not zone vs. man, or 4-3 vs. 3-4. It's the ability to coach it.

When Baskerville and cox filled a few holes and made tackles at the line of scrimmage, it made the entire, scheme work. We got them in 3rd and long, we put pressure on the qb, and we got turnovers. The problem is, we haven’t done it enough.

You have to ask yourself, with nfl talent like delpit, queen, Lawrence, Fulton, stingley, Phillips, shelvin, etc last year, why were we giving up so much yardage and points up to the ole miss game last year?

I don't feel like it's scheme but a few people who haven't been coached up enough or who shouldn't see the field or are having to play out of position.

18 Clark shouldn't be on the field ever. He's a liability and a huge reason why we have been gashed on about every large run.

7 Stevens should be playing LB instead of Safety. But he's kind of neither (Athlete). They NEED him at LB because our LB's are the weakest I've ever seen.

19 Cox has potential, but is having to try and play 2 LB positions that the same time due to Clark being out of position every play. I feel like if left to just doing HIS job, he will excel and become a decent SEC LB.

Safeties need help bad and Jacoby ain't the help.

LB and safety play isn't SEC caliber, much less LSU caliber. It's odd that we are so weak at those 2 position groups considering our history of the studs who have played here. Interior line has been a disappointment also.

Ricks, Ojulari, Stingley, Gaye (pass not rushing) have played lights out. Look at the turnovers and sacks and you'll see those 4. But 4 people don't make a defense.

Edited to clear something up: I think this is 100% on Bo. It's his job to coach and play these guys. IF the best team personnel wise is out there, then he's going to have to change the scheme to match the lack of talent in the middle with the LB's and Safeties. Not sure how you can make that up on scheme but I'm also not taking a paycheck to do it either.

Check out the offensive stats on the year -

Mississippi State

Vs. LSU: 632 yards, 8.3 YPP, 44 points
Vs. Arky: 275 yards, 4.2 YPP, 14 points
Vs. UK: 295 yards, 3.5 YPP, 2 points
Vs. A&M: 325 yards, 5.7 YPP, 14 points

They have averaged 298 yards and 10 points per game outside of LSU and LSU gave them 632 yards and 44 fricking points.

Missouri

Vs. Bama: 414 yards, 6.1 YPP, 19 points
Vs. Tenn: 344 yards, 5.5 YPP, 12 points
Vs. LSU: 470 yards, 7.0 YPP, 45 points
Vs. UK: 145 yards, 4.0 YPP, 20 points

They have averaged 301 yards and 17 points per game outside of LSU and LSU gave them 470 yards and 45 fricking points.

This is truly an historically bad defense. We are FAR too talented to be this bad. I don't care about youth/inexperience. Does anyone truly think we'd be even CLOSE to this bad if Aranda was still here? Absofrickinglutely not.

What were the stats Texas, Alabama, and Ole Miss put up last year?

And no, this isn’t a thread to say Bo better than Aranda. The defense has performed well etc. This a thread to say all isn’t lost and the defense has potential once we have a little more talent and experience.

agree 100%

When shelvin opted out, i knew we were in a bit of trouble, he gave the opponents run game fits... he was just an immoveable objects... perfect NT

Kary is a perfect nickel and I thought could really help his draft stock had he played... hell both of them...

and jacob phillips would have shined as well.

we need a premier Safety again... like a JAmal Adams/Delpit... I dont think we have one... stevens to me is a hybrid that will do well in the league and should be close to the LOS.

I like the pressure were getting and Ojulari will be a first rounder... Roy and Guillory are living up to the billing. Gaye has been a pleasent suprise. but we aint got the LBs or safeties.. if we could get another PREMIER corner, id have Ricks bulk up a little and move him to safety if hes not afraid to lay the wood...

i miss laron landry...
