Was at the Spring game watching kickoff practice, which as a weak spot on 16'Special teams, and unless someone tells me Gamble had a blister on his foot his kickoffs were definately inferior( not nearly to goal line or into end zone) to other two kickers.

I'm not gonna rail on the kid but there are hundreds of other kickers who can consistently place it deep. I dont see how there isnt (or wasnt) anyone better. we lost a ton of field position due to poor kickoffs last year

I was hoping this argument was going die with the end of season. Our kickoff coverage was absolutely smothering last year they consistently stopped returners before the 20. Outside of Gamble hitting it out of bounds we didn't lose any field position on kick-offs. Coffin corner was the plan last year and they executed it pretty well.

Are you kidding me? There are people on tRant who still think Billy Cannon made a mistake fielding the punt against Ole Miss.

I seem to remember a lot of kickoffs going out of bounds. and a few that went down the middle for decent returns.

point is there are times in the game where you don't want to risk a return OR give them the ball on the 35.

I recall differently, but even if I'm wrong, there's no real difference between making our opponent drive 75 yards for a TD or 80 yards for a TD, so just kick the damn ball out of the end zone and eliminate all risk of a big return or kicking the ball OB.

Can't they find some soccer player to kick off and blast the ball out of the end zone??? It's not that hard.

Cam Gamble will always be the scholly we could have offered to Cam Sims and landed Cam Robinson.

To play devils advocate though, if we land Sims and Robinson then we likely land Hootie. If we land Hootie then we probably never get Jamal.

His extra point kick looked good.

The net barley contained it.

Gamble can kick it in the endzone when told to, which he was not told to do last year. I agree that the 3 or 4 yards saved by covering the kickoff did not out weigh the potential downside. Regardless, kickoff coverage last year was lights out. We were 27th in the country, the opponent had an average starting position of 18.76. This idea that we were bad on kickoffs last year needs to die.

No, that is average return yards, not average starting field position. So, if we kick it to the 5 yards line (which is being generous, most seemed to barely make it to the 10) the average starting field position would be around the 24 yard line.

I stand corrected the stat page just said avg. Kickoff coverage executed the scheme they were told and did it well. That scheme is open to all sorts of criticism, one of which what happens when you dont have the a unit as good as we did last year.

Or when you don't have a kicker that can consistently get it inside the 5, or when you have a kicker that can't keep it in bounds.

I'm not sure how the average return yards are calculated and if those include kicks out of bounds, but I'd imagine LSU is middle of the pack at best as far as average starting field position on kickoffs.

I don't have the stats to prove this one way or another, but I doubt this is correct. I suspect that if someone did a study on average points given up from each starting field position - ACROSS A LARGE ENOUGH SAMPLE - there would be a noticeable difference. If there's 6.25% less distance to drive, there should be a corresponding increase in scoring.

I would love to see the results of a proper study. I suspect stats are out there somewhere and assume coaches have seen them.
