I’m not complaining about starting Anderson over Herring, but can anyone tell me what took so long to pull him?

Without watching that inning I can’t wrap my head around why he waited so long before going to Herring.

It didn’t take long. He pulled him quickly. Can read through beginning of game thread to see how it went down

The sooner you stop trying to rationalize Jay's decisions this year the better off you will be. Just ask yourself what common sense dictates and assume he will do the opposite.

And it wasn't like Auburn was thrashing the ball. Lots of low-exit velo hits.

Thanks
I just figured it would be a little quicker hook than that, but I’ll go back and read it.

ETA: I just went back and read through it. He pulled him about where it seemed he should have. I think I would have just went straight to Herring with 2 outs instead of Hellmers, but hindsight is 20/20.

Anderson was very unlucky. Jam shot dropped in short right for their first run. Then he hit a batter and allowed two weak ground balls away from the shift that scored two more (hit right at where the SS would be). He was then pulled and Hellmers allowed a 2 run double to the first batter he faced. One guy hit Anderson hard. The first batter of the game hit a double. All 5 of their runs came with 2 outs. With normal infield positioning, they score 1 run on a bloop single and the inning ends on the next batter. Who Jay started had little to do with how that inning played out. Inducing weak contact is exactly what you want out of Anderson, which he did. Very bad baseball misfortune in his outing today

Lots of flares that got into the right place at the right time. Hard to prevent.

He gave up a rope of a double to start the game then seemed to bounce back. Then he hit a guy and got screwed by the shift on two weak hits that would’ve been right at the SS. Then he got pulled. He didn’t exactly pitch great but didn’t pitch bad in the short amount of time he was out there

I just read through it. I agree with you.

A tough luck outing for Anderson.

PS: I HATE THE SHIFT!!!

Well for one he really wasn’t getting hit hard minus the lead off hitter. The next was a jam shot, hit batter, and two guys that hit it right at where the short stop normally plays. Any kind of luck has Anderson out of that inning still with 0 runs.

That’s what people said all last season too.

The lead off battter was the only hard hit ball in the first inning.
Anderson probably would’ve gotten out of the inning with just one run on the board in our shortstop was playing normal position.

I don’t hate it but most college pitchers don’t have good enough control to be shifting your infield around IMO

I'm not even talking about the shift. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Those are the breaks.

There is no reason for Kling to be hitting lead off. None. He's the worst hitter in the starting lineup, and he's getting the most ABs. He has no pitch recognition, and is up there guessing at every pitch. We've watched this for two years now. He's not going to suddenly break out.

There is no reason to keep your best pitcher in the pen until Game 3 when you are down 5 runs. None. This isn't last years team. There is zero margin for error with this roster. You don't start a young pitcher over your best arm and just hope for the best.

Stop asking your team to win with one hand tied behind its back. If you put your best players in a position to win and come out on the losing end I can live with that. But these decisions just defy logic, reason and common sense.

Jay still believes in the infield shift. That’s pretty much what happened

He explained in his post game that they didn’t have enough time to get Herring up and ready. Sounds like the plan was to get Kade through the first 12 batters and he was assuming since Jump dominated these guys, that Anderson was the one guy most similar to Jump. Like a few posters said, the shift giveth and the shift taketh away.

What really caught my attention is he said Herring had a pitch limit going into the game and he knew he would only get 4 or 5 innings out of him. Then he went on to say that Herring had hit his limit and was fatigued. I just found that interesting. For those that want to start Herring on Sundays, we better be damn sure that we have guys in the bullpen that can come in and finish the game bc he made it sound like Herring is a 65 pitch guy. I haven’t paid attention to his pitch count this year but it seems low from what I remember.

"The shift" won you a national title last year - just to be clear. Think about every play made by Pearson in left in big moments. Multiple times against Wake in games 2 and 3. The ball Langford hit in the bottom of the 9th in game 1. It's ridiculous that these plays seem to have escaped from everyones brains.

Defensive positioning is based on tendencies. It works far more than it fails. Multiple times this year we've had our shortstop playing directly over the second base bag and it has taken away hits. These have come in huge spots late in games. I think it happened like 4 times against Tennessee.

He didn't lead off on Sunday. He led off on Friday and Saturday and we won both of those games.

Did you watch the game yesterday? You're not going to have Herring start warming up to start the top of the first. That was the only way a guy like him, who is going to stretch out, would have been ready in time. Also, it's not "starting your young arm and hoping for the best." Herring has a role. He is a long relief guy out of the pen. It has been played to perfection this year. Why switch things up when it's one of the only things on the entire time that is consistently working?

See above. No coaching decisions yesterday "defied logic".
