after making a 1st down catch. Do you like it?

Here's a pic of former LSU great Josh Reed doing his version of the awesome 1st down signal.

I think this is unsportsmanlike and another aspect of the look at me generation. It should be flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct just as dancing in the endzone or spiking the ball. Just another example of taunting. Act like you made a first down before.

Show some class

I think it IS ACTUALLY a penalty now to do that.

I'm not sure if that move is even legal anymore? Before long, the players will no longer be able to smile after a big play. I wouldn't want to see them do it after every first down, but I wouldn't mind it after making a first down in a very crucial situation.

I am generally anti-hot dogging etc but this never bothered me so long as it is not in someone's face. I mean, dang, it IS a first down and it is the same signal the ref makes. Can a lineman not signal "TD" when a RB blasts through on a short yardage play? How about when a shooting guard swishes a 3 - can he not put his arms up as runs back down the court in celebration of the 3?

Ehh, I'm a big fan of eliminating the showboating "look at me" behaviour as well, but I'm not sure this falls in the same category. It's not really a "give me attention" kind of move like an endzone dance or waving for the crowd after a tackle. And it really isn't taunting unless you somehow target a specific opposing player with it. I see it as an emotional celebration of an achievement, like players raising their hands in the touchdown signal when a touchdown is scored. The simple first down signal is subdued enough to fall short of unsportsmanlike, imo. I like it.

Now, if you throw in a little dancing or grandstanding with it, then I think you've crossed the line.

Hey I just saw your Geology thread. All I mean is play with class and not this look at me crap. You sacked the QB you don't need to dance after that.

On the same subject, after a shoots a free throw, why does everybody need to slap his hand or butt becasue of one foul shot?

i actually like the showboating in the endzone (NFL more than college). You did something that you should be excited about, you should be able to celebrate as long as it isn't taunting the other team (Chad Johnson's putt putt, river dance, etc.). Its original and brings personality to the game, big deal.

exactly. going overboard is, well, overboard. but a little excitement after a good play is fine.

Very aggravating trend that has developed at both the college and professional level in the last few years. I can understand a little encouragement from time to time, but they go way overboard doing this after every FT attempt.

Does anyone ever watch classic games Pre-1980? It is so refreshing to watch a linebacker make a tackle and just run back to the huddle or a reciever or running back make a touchdown and just flip the ball to the referee. Miami changed this forever in the 80's and now video games glorify it. I teach my sons to act like you been there before and you will again. You can play with emotion and class.
