How would you grade Brian Kelly’s tenure so far?

I’ll go “B+”.

Dude did an amazing feat getting us to Atlanta with what he inherited.

This year was awkward. The divorce drama was glaring followed by his deer in the headlights press conference after Florida state. I think he’s smart but was caught being lazy. He didn’t know we couldn’t form tackle

But he inherited a mess and we are looking at two straight 10 win seasons. Excited to see us fire this entire defensive staff

I would agree that it’s a B. Next year is a big year for him here, need our recruiting to pay dividends and the portal to light up.

wouldn't give him a twenty million dollar grade, that's for sure, but I'm sure his ex is glad she'll be getting more than that irregardless

Only game that drops him to a B for me is ole miss this year. No reason we don’t have 10 wins in the regular season

Season 1:10 wins
Season 2: 11 wins
Is A worthy.

Solid B right now

And what would you have graded Eddie O’s last 2 seasons with LSU? You need to put things into context and fully grasp the situation Kelly inherited.

As for OP A-.

On a 10 point scale, 80 so a low B.

He gave us the worst defense in program history which was directly responsible for losing 3 games.

He’s a victim of his own success. The defense debacle is a case study on what not to do on every level.

I actually think house is solid but this staff is a laugh riot. Cooks was fired from his last two jobs. Steeples was in high school three years ago. Lindsey had health issues but I can’t look at his resume and say he’s a big hire

If we’re going to light money on fire we can do way better than that clown car. And if House didn’t think they were competent he should speak up and make changes.

While I've had frustration with some things this season, the perception of BK's resume since coming to LSU compared to other coaches is frickING WILD.

Freeze, Napier, Riley, Norvell, Freeman, Cristobal etc.

Literally none of these people are on par with what Kelly has done in his first two years compared to theirs.

He's potentially going to have back to back 10 win seasons coming out of the best division in college football and people want to talk like he's failing. It's actually crazy and clearly is skewed because some don't like him personally.

Take any other coach at any other program and having this start would be seen as incredibly positive.

But somehow BK is talked about like the guy is borderline on the hot seat.

So fricking stupid.

B-

It would have been higher had they not lost to Texas A&M last year and there is no excuse for the defense being this bad.

B-. He better get his shite together in recruiting. I'm tired of hearing "graduating champions." I hope they graduate, but, ultimately, I don't care about that as much about that as I do winning football championships.

Overall, the jury is still out. 8 and 9 win seasons won't get it done here, and the standard shouldn't slip just because the playoff is expanding to 12 teams.

Next year will tell us a lot about Brian Kelly. As the roster currently sits, it could be a long season.

You could also say he gave us the second best offense in school history.

Transfer portal moves were a shite show. But it’s telling we had to bank on slops to patch the problem.

I will say I liked steeples at the time, but I thought he was going to give us a huge in with St Louis. We aren’t even in the discussion with elite guys there. I think Kelly sends him packing but I loved the concept

I agree with this. Things could be a lot worse during a rebuild (see UF).

The offensive development and coaching this season can’t be questioned. I would normally give an auto B+ or higher for a 9 win regular season, but the defensive issues can’t be excused.

While offensive recruiting is good to great, unfortunately the defensive staff issues have also really hurt us there.

Make the right DC and defensive staff hires and fix recruiting on that side of the ball and Kelly can pull an A next year.

I mean the talking point around here for years is that with Louisiana talent, any schmuck off the street could win 9-10 games at LSU.

He stated it very clearly over the summer that defense was going to be an issue. I don’t think anyone anticipate the shitstorm that we saw this year. Just a perfectly horrific combination of failures.

This board doesn’t value the 10 win season as much as it should. The only two other coaches to have to consecutive 10 win seasons in the SEC are going to Atlanta this year. Not bad company at all.

Excellent post and what I was fishing for.

LSU was dead in the water and he patched together success.

Next year won’t be anything epic but I’m hoping it sets us up for a huge year 4. Half the base will squeal like pigs when we go 9-4 but we will get everyone back and be deep.

I’m excited and anxious about the off season. We are close to being elite again but we need to replace our entire defensive staff. None of them are LSU material
